  • GA-EP45-UD3P v1.6 running memory at 800 instead of 1060

    I have a Gigabyte GA-EP45-UD3P mobo with 4x Kingston HyperX 2GB 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 1066 (PC2 8500) Desktop Memory.
My mobo is v1.6 with firmware FB.

I checked with CPU-Z and bios that the mobo is running my memory only at 800.

There is a firmware version FD and a beta version from 2010 available for this mobo from Gigabyte. Nothing indicates memory changes.

I wonder if I have to configure the memory manually? If so, how?

Re: GA-EP45-UD3P v1.6 running memory at 800 instead of 1060

    Welcome to the forum.

You can probably run your 8GB of memory at 1066MHz using your current bios version after making a few manual bios changes.
You will need to perform some Prime95 stress testing to ensure that your higher memory speeds are stable and won't cause any problems.

We need detailed information about ALL OF THE HARDWARE in your system.

We can best help you after you create a detailed hardware list in the System Specs
portion of your forum profile at the bottom of the profile page or in your forum signature.
Be sure to include brand names and model numbers.
When you are done editing or creating your hardware list, save the settings.
After you have created your detailed hardware list, provide the following information:

    Include a screenshot that displays:
    • Memset using the SPD and ">>" tabs
    • Cpu-z CPU and Mainboard screens (several instances can be run at the same time)
    • EasyTune6 --> TUNER tab --> ADVANCE tab --> VOLTAGE tab (only the Voltage tab is needed)
    • CoreTemp screen [for your cpu's VID (Voltage ID)]

The latest version of ET6 for your motherboard is version: B12.1122.1 -- size: 42.59 MB -- date: 2012/11/22
    and can downloaded from GIGABYTE - Motherboard - Socket 775 - GA-EP45-UD3P (rev. 1.6)

I only run ET6 manually when I want to see the applied voltages.

Once you have provided all of the requested information, I can provide you with the needed bios changes to run your memory at or near 1066MHz.
I am currently running 8GB of Kingston HyperX T1 memory at 1080MHz with my cpu running at 3.825GHz.
When my cpu was running at 4.012GHz my fastest stable memory speed was at 944MHz using 5-5-4-12 primary memory timings.

you n4ed yto go in bios and setup ram speed to correct fsb ratio (so you get the speed you want, also adj voltage as running ram has a higher voltage, also set ram setting correctly, ioe timmings tc, match what ram you got.

i have this board running 8g of 10xx ram at 2.2volts

Ok. I updated my profile. Still need to check the graphics card.
Memset doesn't run on my setup. I believe it has to do with the screen resolution (which I hate to change since the PC is used as a media center PC with custom res)

I have four screenshots. But I can upload only one due to the 300kb limit...

Also, here is the memory spec.

The following bios settings should let you run your memory at 1066MHz.

If the MCH Core setting is too high or too low your system might reset your bios settings after going through several boot loops.

The 5-5-5-15 primary memory timings should be fine.

Performance Enhance = Turbo provides very good memory performance when the cpu speed is at stock speeds or has a modest cpu overclock.

To ensure that your system is stable you should run an 8 hour or longer Prime95 Large FFT test. If one or more Prime95 worker threads has an error this indicates that your system is not stable and the test should be stopped. You will need to provide detailed information about the failure and include details about the bios settings that you changed.

If you aren't familiar with Prime95, click on the Prime95 tutorial link in my forum signature.

Kingston did not provide pre-programmed settings in the memory's SPD for 1066MHz speeds and this is why you need to make the following changes.

              Code:
              [SIZE=2][FONT=Lucida Console]
              [B]DRAM Performance Control[/B]
Performance Enhance ------------------- : [Turbo] <--- the TURBO setting should be OK

DRAM Timing Selectable ---------------- : [Manual] <-- set to MANUAL for overclocking

If you want to upload one or more image files in a post, you should use the Insert Image from URL option where you can include image files with one of the following file types:
              jpg, jpeg, png, or gif

Each image file needs to have its own unique web address and the uploaded image file size is not a problem.

I upload image files to my forum posts from my DropBox public folder and there are many other free file sharing sites that have a unique web address for each file.

Thanks for all your help. Initial configuration seems to work. I will have to do Prim95 next.

The only difference I encountered was the following BIOS setting. I don't have:
                Extreme Memory Profile --- (X.M.P.) --- : [Disabled] <--- Leave this Disabled

Upon booting up, CPU-Z reports 533.3 (from 400 before). And ET is at 1064.

Unfortunately, my memory test from the "Windows Experience index" did not go up :-)

I noticed that the bus speed in CPU-Z shows as 266 MHz. And rated FSB at 1066 MHz. Is the 266MHz normal for this board?

Re: GA-EP45-UD3P v1.6 running memory at 800 instead of 1060

                  You're welcome.

For me, WEI is not very useful.

Keep in mind that your E7500 dual core cpu only has 3MB of L2 cache and for comparison, my Q9550 quad core cpu has 12MB of L2 cache.

My Q9550 WEI memory score at 2.83GHz with 1066MHz memory speed is 7.3
My Q9550 WEI memory score at 4.01GHz with 944MHz memory speed is 7.5
My E6850 (with 4MB of L2 cache) WEI memory score at 3.0GHz with 1047MHz memory speed was 6.8 (on an N650SLI-DS4 motherboard)

If you want a noticeable real world performance increase, a 20% - 25% cpu speed overclock will make a difference, but this usually requires a lot more tweaking and stress testing. With my Q9550 I was able to overclock from 2.83GHz to 3.20GHz with minimal bios changes but I ran each of the three Prime95 tests for 8 - 10 hours to ensure that my system was stable. With the older hardware that we have, I don't want to push things too far by using much higher voltage settings.

Post an Memset screen-shot so that I can see if your secondary memory timings are where they should be.

Is Performance Enhance set to TURBO in your bios?

When available, enabling the X.M.P. option seldom worked with P35/P45 motherboards and it often caused problems.

                  **edit**
I noticed that the bus speed in CPU-Z shows as 266 MHz. And rated FSB at 1066 MHz. Is the 266MHz normal for this board?
Yes this is normal for your cpu when it is not overclocked. My Q9550 bus speed is 333MHz and the Rated FSB (Front Side Bus) is 4 x 333 or 1333MHz. My overclocked 4.012GHz bus speed is 472MHz and the Rated FSB is 1888MHz.

I had Prime95 run for over 8 hours with no issues.

I remain having the issue that I can't run memset due to my resolution that I like to avoid changing as it is a custom res. Is there another way to obtain the timings? e.g with ET?

ET6 does not provide the information that is reported by Memset.

I downloaded and installed Sisoftware Sandra and it did not report the needed info.

Aida64 Extreme might report the information but it cost $40. You can download it and use it as a 30-day free trial.

Ok. I run memset. Attached is the screenshot.

Does above memset look ok? I had for the first time a lockup streaming after streaming 2 hours of Amazon.
During reboot I got a BIOS screen stating that default values are loaded. Not sure if this is related or not.

The Memset screenshot looks good, but....you should always include the settings for both memory channels by pressing the ">>" button to the right of the SPD button. With the EP45 motherboards, some of the memory related settings can be set differently for memory channel A and memory channel B, and this should not be done unless you really know what you are doing. My screenshot in post #2 includes Memset's information for both memory channels.

When you get a BSOD or system freeze you should check the windows Event Viewer to see if there are warning or error messages immediately before the problem occurred. If there is a BSOD, programs like WhoCrashed or BlueScreenView can provide information that often helps determine what caused the problem.

When you get a message that the default values have been loaded, you should immediately go into the bios to see if the previous settings are still displayed. If they are unchanged you should save settings and exit the bios to restore the displayed settings. You can save up to eight different bios profiles in the bios. When you have different saved bios settings you can load the saved settings that you want to use. Check your motherboard user manual in the bios chapter to read about how to use the F11 and F12 function keys to Save CMOS to Bios and Load CMOS from Bios in the main Bios screen. I always have one reserved saved bios profile slot for saving and loading temporary bios profile settings when I'm making and testing new settings.

I checked the event viewer, with no info other than the critical "unexpected reboot". WhoCrashed didn't find anything either. Looks like this crash did not produce a dmp.

I went back to the BIOS. The first screen I got was: "The system experienced boot failure to overclocking or changes of voltages". The settings were are still present. And after rebooting I have my memory again at 1066.

Here is the memset with both banks:
