  • Socket 771 Mod Xeon X5460 GA-P35-DS3L Overclock

    So I have an ageing system that is still my primary workstation and I recently did the Socket 771 mod to put an X5460 into my P35-DS3L. I'm looking to get the best performance out of the system but am new to overclocking so appreciate any help I can get. I have read numerous P35 overclocking guides but am not able to find any data on overclocking with an X5460.

    My current overclock is 3.6Ghz and I have attached CPU-Z screenshots at idle and my current BIOS settings, my system details should be in my profile.

    I would love to be able to get to 4Ghz purely for satisfaction but any improvements will be welcomed.

    Your E5450 Xeon cpu is similar to the Q9650 cpu and overclocking to 3.80 - 4.0GHz shouldn't be a problem.
    You will need to increase Cpu Vcore as you o/c higher.

    You might need to set:
    FSB OverVoltage Control___ [+0.2V]
    (G)MCH OverVoltage Control [+0.2V]

    I recommend that your set:
    PCI Express Frequency (Mhz)_______ [101] <-- 100 should also be OK

    After my systems had passed extended stress testing, my P35-DS3L and P35-DS4 systems passed additional stress testing with:
    Performance Enhance = [Turbo]
    CPU Enhanced Halt (C1E) _____: [Enabled]
    CPU EIST__________________: [Enabled]
    Static tRead Value = 7 is stable with 8GB of memory on my P35-DS3L system with CPU Host Frequency = 438MHz. YMMV
    Memset v4.1 will show this value as Performance Level. Memset v4.1 Download - Tweakers.fr

    I don't think that C2/C2E and C4/C4E State Support was available on my systems.

    My Q9650 booted and passed minimal stress testing on my P35-DS4 system using 9 x 460MHz = 4.14GHz but cpu core voltage was too high.
    The Q9650 is currently running at 9 x 438MHz = 3.816GHz and passed all of my stress testing.
    9 x 445MHz = 4.00GHz was also stable but I wanted to use somewhat lower cpu core voltages.

    My P35-DS4 + Q9650 + 8GB Mesmset values are similar.

      I will try changing those settings and let you know how I get on.
      Just to be sure, I have an X5460 not an E5460 and also I'm not sure if my RAM is great for overclocking?
      Can you recommend a maximum VCore and temperature for this system?

        Only the X5460 has a stock 9.5x cpu multiplier @ 3.16GHz and the other processors have a stock 9.0x multiplier @ 3.0GHz.
        As I recall the C2D processors could safely run up to about 1.42 - 1.45 volts.l
        Given the age of our quad core processors I feel that up to about 1.39 volts should be safe.

        It's unlikely that you will notice any real world performance differences between 3.8GHz and 4.0GHz.
        You can use RealTemp or CoreTemp to see what the maximum Tj. Max setting is for your processor.
        I don't want any of my core temperatures to be higher than about 75o(C) with my system under full load.

        Maybe I should add a poll to this thread:

        In the above screen-shot the implied TJ Max from RealTemp is 100o for cores 0 and 1, 112o(C) for core 2 and 110o(C) for core 3, which I don't think is correct.
        I always thought that the sum for each cores' current temperature plus distance to TJ Max should be the same.
        I might be wrong, maybe our quad core processors can have different TJ. Max settings for each core.
        As far as I know, each cpu has only one TJ. Max setting that applies to all cores.

        You can determine the "corrected" TJ Max setting for your cpu by using RealTemp and following their TJ Max procedure using Real Temp - Documentation




        In this screen-shot, RealTemp implies that TJ. Max is 90o(C) and CoreTemp states that TJ. Max is 100o(C).
        Note: It's normal for each core to have slightly different core temperatures from the other cores at idle and at load.

        I hope that I'm not confusing anyone with too many facts.

            You're welcome.

            It wouldn't surprise me if Cpu-z got it wrong, especially with your 771 cpu/socket mod.

            Did you take the picture or did it come from the web?

            The photo also shows 3.16GHz so you should be able to use the 9.5 cpu multiplier if needed.

              Thanks so much for the interest in helping me profJim,

              I took that picture myself and uploaded it from my phone there - does that mean I should try using the 0.x multiplier?

              I'm busy studying for final exams atm and try and reply in my breaks and do some BIOS tinkering if I get a chance in the evenings.

              As for the question about the RAM, I contacted crucial support live help and one of the guys told me I can't overclock my RAM but I think (hope) he was just trying to deter me!

              I will let you know how I get on and post some screenshots including temperatures so you can get a better idea of things. I've been using Core Temp and a combination of Orthos and Prime95 to stress-test but haven't really done a thorough test yet - would you recommend Real Temp and Intel Burn Test over these?

                So I changed the settings as per your advise and used the 0.5 multiplier and was able to boot at 4GHz! :D

                I haven't done any stability testing yet but will do so when I hear back from you about the best test to run.

                  Nice!

                  Ok, now it's time for the not-so-much-fun but necessary part.

                  I like to first run a brief IBT (Intel Burn Test) or LinX preliminary stress test for 5 - 10 loops only, any longer tests are abusing your cpu.
                  You will need to carefully watch your cpu core temperatures where the core temperatures might go as high as 80o(C) or higher.
                  Abort the test if core temps go higher than 80o(C).
                  Ideally core temperatures will be in the 60o - 70o(C) range.

                  Others may disagree, but I've seen quite a few cases where owners ran either of these tests for much longer time with no errors, only to find that their systems fail one or more of the three different Prime95 tests. This has happened to me many times and this is why either of these programs are only good for quick preliminary tests.
                  You should post the test window results along with your windows in post #8.
                  The GFlops scores are a good indicator that will show if your system's performance is where it should be.

                  I recommend running the Prime95 Blend test for at least 3 - 4 hours.
                  Prime95 core temperatures should be about 10o(C) lower than the IBT or LinX tests.
                  An 8 - 12 hour test is better, but isn't needed right now.
                  If there are any Prime95 worker errors, stop the test and post the Prime95 results window along with windows in post #8.
                  Your current memory timings are not optimal right now and a 4 hour test will be fine where you will need to repeat the test after we optimize the memory settings.

                  It's best to keep detailed hard copy notes for each test that includes all of your bios settings and related test results.
                  It will help others if you also post your bios template settings when there are errors and if there are no errors.

                  I noticed that CoreTemp reports your cpu model correctly.

                    Well it can't be very stable at all because the system didn't POST first time today. Do you think I need to up the Vcore any more?

                      So I increased the Vcore anyways and gave it another go.

                      Got into Windows fine and started Intel Burn Test and... Bluescreen.

                        Telling us that you had a BSOD is next to useless.
                        Your can provide useful BSOD information by running WhoCrashed or Blue Screen Viewer - Blue screen of death (STOP error) information in dump files.
                        There is information on the Blue Screen View web page to properly configure windows to save mini-dump files.
                        Some BSOD bugcheck codes are caused by incorrect cpu voltage.

                        We don't know if your 3.60GHz setup passed any stress tests.
                        Once your system is stable with lower overclocks, it's best to gradually increase your cpu overclock and test again.
                        Using shortcuts when you are overclocking seldom work.
                        It's best to o/c in steps with lower cpu speed overclock increases, such as 3.60GHz to 3.70GHz, 3.8GHz, 3.85GHz, 3.90GHz etc.

                        It's best to overclock with EIST and C1E disabled while you are overclocking and testing.
                        Once you've reached your o/c goal and passed your stress tests, you can then enable both of these settings and repeat your stress tests.

                        With 2x2GB of memory, you might be able to use 1.80 - 2.00 (+0.20) dram voltage.
                        MCH Core voltage = +0.10 might be adequate. When MCH Core is too high or too low, boot problems or instability problems can occur.

                        Your memory is currently running at 842MHz and this shouldn't be a problem.
                        In your original post, you used Performance Enhance = [Turbo] with 5-5-5-18 settings.
                        Set Performance Enhance = [Standard] for now until your final o/c is stable, then you can retest and verify that your system is still stable with Turbo setting enabled.

                        If you change multiple settings at one time, you won't know which of the altered settings fixed a problem or caused instability.

                          Sorry I haven't replied for a while - exams fast approaching and studying has taken priority (keeps getting in the way!).

                          So I went back and changed the vcore and the other BIOS settings but kept the 0.5x multiplier and Intel Burn Test ran without crashing for 5 tests (was playing it safe seeing as it crashed on all the other times).

                          The highest temp was a brief 79°, here is the 'after' screenshot and the BIOS settings:

                            Passing the IBT test is a start, now it's time to run the Prime95 Blend test for at least 3 - 4 hours.
                            Follow the Prime95 instructions in post #9 and if there are no errors, you can try 9.5 x 411MHz = 3.905GHz.

                            Your GFlops score is about 10% lower than it should be at 3.80GHz.
                            This is possibly because of your AUTO setting for Static tRead Value (aka tRD).
                            Memset reports this value as Performance Level and it is currently at 12.
                            Repeat IBT one more time with tRD = 7 to see if your system is still stable and post the new GFlops score.
                            Then you can perform the Prime95 Blend test.

                            Attached is my Q9650 + P35-DS4 results at 3.80GHz.
                            My GFlops score is a bit lower than normal because I set threads = 4 instead of using threads = AUTO.
                            Your GFlops score will be somewhat higher if you can set stress level to 1536 or 1792MB.

                              Here is a teaser for you.
                              This is the highest cpu speed that my Q9650 + P35-DS4 system will boot.
                              I loosened some timings and bumped the cpu core voltage to 1.45 volts.

                              These settings were a SWAG that happened to work the first time and probably aren't stable.
                              I found my system's limits and quit while I was ahead.

                              I didn't perform any additional stress tests because there is no way that I will run with cpu voltage this high.

                              As I recall Q9550 or Q9650 IBT scores running at 4.20GHz with an EP45-UD3P motherboard were 55 - 57 GFlops.
