what paste are you using boon between the die and ihs?

well I delidded mine in about 5 mins,used mx4 on both the die and heatsink and guess what!!!!!!!!!

EXACTLY THE SAME TEMPS

ive ordered some Coollaboratory Liquid PRO but ive heard its a real pain to clean off,right now im feeling a bit deflated

Can you spin the IHS freely on the chip? If not you may not have removed enough adhesive. Pics?

ill have a play when my liquid pro arrives,i could probably scrape off more of the sealant

the pics arnt very good,no nicks either not with my method

Ok.
99% of this is getting the IHS lower. If you don't remove all the adhesive, you can't get it all the way (and evenly) on top the cpu.

I used a single edged razor and cotton swabs with alcohol to remove the adhesive. Just be careful with the razor or don't use it at all to clean the adhesive, you don't want to cut through that layer protecting the pcb.

Once you redo it you'll be fine.

Also you might consider lapping the IHS (top!). Amazing how many of them are not flat, or even close.

See, it's not that Intel's TIM is bad (it's not) it's mostly the gap.
Using liquid pro or ultra is good for long term use, from what I understand.
Delidded my i7-3770K, loaded temperatures drop by 20°C at 4.7GHz - AnandTech Forums

ill have another go later,i was only hitting 80c on two cores @4.6ghz anyway,but a 10-20c drop would be welcomed,itll be wed/thurs till the liquid pro arrives

Great. Might as well wait and do it all at once.
Just make sure you clean up all that old adhesive really good. Of course you can eyeball it and get all the black stuff off, but if the IHS will spin freely on top the cpu then you know for sure you got it.

wazza if you decide you want to reapply some kind of adhesive to secure the IHS (just make sure you push the IHS down all the way), several have suggest using RTV high heat adhesive. You can usually find this stuff easily at an auto parts store.

Not necessarily this exact one, I just grabbed this pic for an example.

all I can say is WOW on the liquid pro,ive dropped by 15-20 c from 81-85c @4.6ghz to 67c max!!!! I wonder if its safe to use on a gpu core??

currently working on 4.8ghz,so far im at 1.368v but I need to do some long gaming to eliminate whea/processor warnings,temps are 76c max now in ibt/maximum

It's for sure a quick way to drop temps.
I don't see why you couldn't use it on a gpu. But I wouldn't expect the same results, but maybe better than stock.

I spread it on the cpu using the syringe it comes in, I only use a little drop.

Maybe for Haswell Intel will go back to using solder instead of leaving a gap between the IHS & cpu and stuffing it full of TIM.

It does seem strange ,they went for paste inside.Im sure they test them to the limit.
Maybe it was some test like "Ok lads lets see who are the real fanatics out there.. or maybe they just didnt want sandybridge owners to feel too bad

This liquid pro,is that one of the "heavy metal" compounds that you cant use with aluminium base coolers?

I think they went for paste on ib not to damage x79 sales,whos gonna buy x79 when you can overclock a 3770k to its performance levels? which would have been possible if they had used solder,intel arnt that silly


@kick yh it corrodes aluminium,nickel plate and copper are fine though

Intel went with that design for reasons we don't know. It's possible it could affect longevity, although how much is anyone's guess. In the short term I'm not worried about it.
