  • X58A-UD3R - which SATA 6GB port to use?

    Hi People,
I'm going to plug in a 2TB WD 6Gb/s drive and not sure which of the SATA ports are best for 6GB/s? I know there are two controllers, but not sure about the difference between them?

    Thanks!

Re: X58A-UD3R - which SATA 6GB port to use?

Your mother board has 2 sets of Sata2 ports. 1 Intel controller which supports 6 devices and 1 jmicron/Gigabyte controller which supports 2 devices. Then it has 1 Marvell controller which support 2 Sata3 devices.

The sata3 ports would be the first column of white ports closest to the blue ports.
    Code:
    South Bridge:

        6 x SATA 3Gb/s connectors (SATA2_0, SATA2_1, SATA2_2, SATA2_3, SATA2_4, SATA2_5) supporting up to 6 SATA 3Gb/s devices
Support for SATA RAID 0, RAID 1, RAID 5, and RAID 10

    Marvell 9128 chip:

        2 x SATA 6Gb/s connectors (GSATA3_6, GSATA3_7) supporting up to 2 SATA 6Gb/s devices
Support for SATA RAID 0, and RAID 1

    * SATA3 RAID 0 4x and SATA3 2x performance are maximum theoretical values. Actual performance may vary by system configuration.
    * SATA3 SSDs are not recommended for use in RAID 0 mode on Marvell SE9128 ports.

    GIGABYTE SATA2 chip:

1 x IDE connector supporting ATA-133/100/66/33 and up to 2 IDE devices
        2 x SATA 3Gb/s connectors (GSATA2_8, GSATA2_9) supporting up to 2 SATA 3Gb/s devices
Support for SATA RAID 0, RAID 1, and JBOD

    JMicron JMB362 chip:

2 x eSATA 3Gb/s connectors (eSATA/USB Combo) on the back panel sup- porting up to 2 SATA 3Gb/s devices
Support for SATA RAID 0, RAID 1, and JBOD

Re: X58A-UD3R - which SATA 6GB port to use?

      Hi there,
I have a problem with a SATA 3.0 HDD I installed on this board.

I installed: WD 2TB 3.5" SATA-III 6Gb/s Caviar Black Hard Drive 7200RPM 64MB Cache - at first it worked fine, quite fast no problems.
After a couple of weeks it stopped working, disappeared from teh bios/windows etc.

I tried playing with bios settings but with no success.
I opened the computer today and made sure all the connections are fine and even reconnected it to the other SATA 3.0 port - still no success.
I did notice hat the computer takes longer to boot now with the bios HDD detection phase taking noticeably longer than before.

Is this a HDD problem? Is it the Mobo? this is the second x58A - UD3R board I have after the first had some SATA problems...

      Please advise,
      Thanks!

Hi, I re-flashed to the latest version (F7) and cleared the DMI - still no drive appearing...
I did notice something interesting: When the bios boots and lists all the IDE channel devices, those who are empty list as :None', but channel 6 Master (where the 2GB sata 3.0 HDD is installed) appears blank (i.e. it doesn't say 'none').

As a bonus the system now takes ages to boot (seems stuck at a blinking cursor after listing the DMI devices for about 3 minutes before win 7 64 boots) - and I'm running windows fro an SSD!

The new BIos also has a bug, it loads and works well but Every time I go into the 'M.I.T' menu (to configure the RAM, for example) it loads but then hangs... I can se eth voltages etc update but no matter what key I click on the keyboard... nothing happens...

I haven't tried plugging the HDD to a'regular' port, will do it now...

Thanks for the help, much appreciated!!

            Hi,
            Another quick update,
I tried connecting the HDD to another port (Regular SATA) and it still doesn't work, so I guess it died?

Also, I still cant enter Bios to change my memory setting, the system is not overclocked but my 1600 mem defaults to 1066...

            Any advice is appreciated,
            Thanks!!

After flashing bios on the first reboot did you enter bios and "Load Optimized Defaults" save changes reboot back into bios and attempt to make changes?

What keyboard you using? Usb or ps2 one?you might need to enable Usb keyboard in the BIOS,to set ram speed change spd system memory multiplier to manual then use spd to set the speed to 1600mhz,try assigning a new drive letter for your hdd, then it might show up

Try using a PS/2 keyboard to get into your BIOS, otherwise flash it with an older version that you can verify is 100% stable. Sounds like your drive is toast, unfortunately, since it disappeared of its own accord and isn't a symptom of you flashing the BIOS. However, if you can test it in a different system that would be the surefire way to determine if its the drive or another faulty mobo.

Only eat I can think of would be to plug it into another pc and label the drive,it still hang in the BIOS with no hdd's attached? Could be something else as it shouldn't hang like that
