what are they rated at 9-9-9-24? if so try that, you should be able to set them to 1T and not 2T,1T is better, also have you tried with 171x22? that will give you a true 3.8ghz,keep all voltages the same and see how you get on thats if you feel upto re-testing

      Re: Gigabyte X58A-UD3R / i7 930 D0 stable 3.8GHz - Advice needed.

171x22 doesn't change from 170x22 in the BIOS unless Windows handles and sees it at 3.8GHz than the BIOS does. (No increase until you do 172x22, hits 3.8GHz at 173x22)

The RAM is rated at 1600MHz 7-8-7-20 1.65V Corsair XMS3 CMX6GX3M3C1600C7 (Bios sees autos it to 8-8-8-20)
Manually set it to 8-8-8-24-1T to see if my voltages can handle it, Gonna run a 2-3hr Prime95 and call it for a night.

Again thanks for all your help.

        Re: Gigabyte X58A-UD3R / i7 930 D0 stable 3.8GHz - Advice needed.

Back again, wish I was here for a different thing but yea......

        So settings: 170x22 ..... 3.7~GHz ish
        RAM timing 9-9-9-27-1T
VCore ...... Normal (1.275V in BIOS)
QPI/VTT ..... As of right now 1.375V in BIOS
        DRAM Voltage..... 1.66V

I ran Prime95 and about 2 hours into it, Worker 7 gave out and said it had a hardware failure.

Now I assume all I have to do is up the QPI/VTT a notch and retest but am I going too high? And how high can I really go? Past 1.400V~ in the BIOS?

BIOS numbers confuse me a little because it may say 1.4~ but it may be lower or something along those lines in Windows.

        Thanks

Edit: Upped IOC Core to 1.240V from 1.10V and ICH Core to 1.140V from 1.10V in the BIOS. Testing Prime95 again.

You will see a good difference between 999-26 and 787-20, once you are done testing CAS 8 I would go ahead with spec timings. Or do so now and skip over CAS 8

At 1700Mhz though you may not be able to run stock timings, or you may need 1.375-1.425 QPI/Vtt to do so, or a bit more ram voltage instead.

            Re: Gigabyte X58A-UD3R / i7 930 D0 stable 3.8GHz - Advice needed.

After much trial and error, I am back at square one.

But I have learned somethings about my chip, it doesn't like the 20X and 21X multipliers (21X only at stock) for getting it past 3.7~GHz.
Redid my Bios like in wazza300's link but a few changes.

            200x19 = 3.8GHz
            Uncore Frequency 17X
            Vcore 1.3500V
            QPI/VTT 1.355V
            DRAM 1.66V
            RAM timing 8-8-8-24-1

For my initial testing of these BIOS I ran Linx and all my cores hit 80C, 83C being maxed for 1st core. Obviously these are high temps but is it too high to continue and be happy with if I do find a stable OC?

19 or 21 should be more stable than 22, at least be able to use less volts and easier to get stable anyway.

You may need a stronger cooler if you want to get at 3.8Ghz or so. But if you can't buy one you should be ok, since our PC's never reach full load LinX temps except when we use LinX of course.

Yea I figured we never really leave our rigs on full load 24/7 but when I run prime95 for some reason I never break 81C.
My idle is only around 42~46C.

Oh well, gonna run prime95 for the rest of the day and see where it gets me, if a worker stops gonna bump the QPI/VTT a notch and see if that doesn't do it.

Wait a minute, prime95 gives you 81C? I thought you said LinX gave you 80-81C on your last reply, which is it?

Generally LinX is 10+ hotter. Just wondering though so we could be sure of what you meant.

Good luck with the testing and tweaking

                    Yea forget about those temps.

Well after much testing I think I finally got this thing stable, going on 7.5hrs strong on Prime95 no errors yet.
Things I learned, this chip hates 20X and 21X (unless stock settings) and is a voltage hog, got this thing up at Vcore 1.3V and QPI/VTT 1.4~ in BIOS , had to turn off Hyper Threading because Prime95 made it hit temps of about 87~90C.

Now if this thing is "stable". are those voltages too high and detrimental to my chip or am I in the "ok" area? and considering I am not at full load all the time, you think it be ok to turn Hyper Threading on? or is it not worth it if this is just a gaming rig?

Thanks again for the helpful input, took about 5 days but almost done!

i think youll be ok with those voltages and hyperthreading on,playing games wont put very much load on the cpu, even less with a decent card, remember to keep it on balanced profile so it wont run at full speed/voltages when its idle

Ya, I agree, I think those are fine temps and voltages.

Some CPU's are just volt hogs, nothing you can do about it. My last 5 or so CPU's have been that way, just recently got one that isn't so bad finally!

HT on or off is up to you, since it makes things hot off may be your best bet and since you are a gamer that might be best anyway since it's been shown to perform better in most games with it off.
