  • Gigabyte X58A-UD3R / i7 930 D0 stable 3.8GHz - Advice needed.

As the title says, I am in need of some advice on how to get my i7 930 to be
"stable". I tried to shoot for 4.0GHz but the heat wasn't to my liking.

    Some info:

    Gigabyte X58A-UD3R
    Corsair XMS3 CMX6GX3M3C1600C7 6GB 3x2GB DDR3 Rated at 1600MHz 7-8-7-20 1.65V
    i7 930 D0 2.8GHz
Cooler Master CM690 II ATX Mid Tower
    Akasa Nero S CPU Cooler

Realtemp shows my idle at 41-45C. Averaging 42C on all cores.

Temps on max load vary between programs:
    Prime95 = 71~79C max, Linx = 75~81C max
Both programs made it hit 81 but rarely go over it, it depends on how hot my room and if the door is closed I guess.

As it shows, I left everything "Auto" except Memory timing, Vcore, QPI/VTT voltage, and DRAM voltage.

I ran these similar settings through prime95 and Linx but the QPI/VTT of 1.255V and it fails around the 2-2.5 hr mark. So going to up it to 1.275V and see if that does anything.

    Thanks for your time.

youll need around 1.3-1.38 qpiv, running windows 7??? enable balanced power saving profile to save heat at idle, set cpu voltage to normal in voltages and use 21x cpu multi it will use less voltage than 22x

heres my coretemps at idle with win7 balanced on

^^^thats coretemps on high performance windows setting at idle

whats that nero s cooler like??? i used to have the nero 967 and it was great apart from intel push pins so i got rid

      Re: Gigabyte X58A-UD3R / i7 930 D0 stable 3.8GHz - Advice needed.

To clarify, yes using Windows 7 Ultimate.
The Akasa Nero S is ok, kinda a pain to take off that fan. It uses screws with springs (springs that go around the mounting screws)

      To recap:
So your saying use a multiplier of 21x instead of 19x?

And to set Vcore to normal, QPI to about 1.3-1.38V and everything I have else leave alone? DRAM, IOH, etc.. ect..

Thanks for the reply, been at this for about 3 days, tried to shoot for 4.0GHz but I think my cooling doesn't like the Heat, been so many trial and error moments but at least I am somewhat close. maybe......

for 3.8ghz i only need to set cpu to normal voltage setting, qpi to 1.30000 and dram voltage to 1.66, set uncore freq to 2x your ram multiplier and add one or two to it so 8x ram multi will be 17 or 18x uncore freq, everything else i leave on auto i dont use llc either and yh 21x multi is better,i see you using 19x to set ram at 1600mhz?? you can stick with that if you want or use 21x and underclock your ram to 1440mhz,some cpu's are more stable with an even or odd multiplier you can try a 20x cpu multi youll have to test

Ok well, with those settings Windows would get to splash screen then you think it'll hit the desktop but it will BSOD.

I upped the QPI/VTT up to 1.45V in the bios, so I can boot into Windows but I don't know if this acceptable.
I lowered Uncore Frequency to x17.

Sorry if I am being a nuisance but this is frustrating.

My first OC and it is really something, ok.

I set in Bios Vcore to 1.28V 1-2 notches under 1.30000V. Anything else and it not let me boot into Windows.

QPI/VTT is set in the Bios at 1.455V. CPUZ shows my Volts at 1.264V but if I run anything that will stress CPU I get BSOD, 0x0003B or something random like that.

Well I guess my chip doesn't really like the 21X Multiplier.

                      Set it to 22x170
                      Vcore at normal
                      QPI at 1.355V in Bios
                      RAM timing 9-9-9-26-2T

Gonna test these and I assume if I fail any test I just need to up Vcore and or QPI a notch and restest?

Thanks for your time and help.

Well after 20 times runs in LinX it passed without errors in 1.5hrs with these settings, I would like to thank you wazza300 for your help, technically its not 3.8GHz but meh, better than stock.

Whats your opinion on the length of a stress test to deem a CPU OC "Stable"

I know prime95 24hr is ideal but whats your guys stance on some?

                          Thanks again, almost there!

yh its not 3.8ghz exactly but i use 180x21 and you 180x22,i use that clock so i can use my ram at 1800mhz,when i clock higher i have to come off normal cpu voltage use 1.2+ v for 4ghz+ so 3.8 is the best bet imo, some say 12hour prime95 test its upto you id be happy with 2-4 hour,so whats your current cpu and qpi voltages?? you can set your ram command rate to 1T aswell

                              170x22 3.7~GHz almost 3.8GHz.
                              Vcore at normal setting
                              QPI at 1.355V in Bios
                              RAM timing 9-9-9-26-2T

Should I just leave my RAM timing or bring it down? heard it doesn't really help much except in benchmarks.
