  • 3 weeks old hardware already broken ?

    Hi :f

saturday morning Im going to start my pc, it starts for some seconds and shuts off. no beeps at all. i pushed the power button for several times again without reaction - shock!

I plugged off the psu, waitet for some minutes. plugged it on again and it bootet up, puuuuuhh. went all the day long normaly.

when I came back later at night and wanted to start the pc again, same issues but no boot at all.

I check everything again, plugged off everthing, bios reset, battery out, waiting 30 minutes, nothing happens

It starts for 2 to 3 seconds, fans are running, LED`s are on - shuts down. no beep.

It only starts if i plug off the psu, else it happens nothing.

the postcode-LED on the board shows at beginning several unrecognized signs (seems to be the checkup) and then short 89, then 69 and it shuts down.

    from the user manual:

    69h: Turn on L2 Cache
89h: 1. Assign IRQs to PCI devices
    2. Set up ACPI table at top of the Memory

    hm, and ?

the system was overclocked but the voltages and temperatures have been fine for 24/7

    4ghz,
    vcc 1.29,
    ich/vtt 1.28,
    vdimm 1.65

what ive checked then: plugged off every cable, every card, hdd`s, battery. let it like this over night

today I went again on it with hope - nothing.

tested every memorystick separately - nothing

tested without power plug for the graphics - loud glaring beep (familiar)

    what now?

    board or cpu broke?

    sys:

    i7 920
    Gigabyte X58A-UD5
    G.skill 6GB Ripjaws

whole system in my signature, beside the hdd`s its everything new since 3 weeks.

Re: 3 weeks old hardware already broken ?

what ive just tested this methode by Hisn

    Null-Methode
Only CPU, Cooler, Power on the board (nothing else, all cables off, all cards off)

start it, listen for beeps, if no beep, cpu or board broken,
if beeps, notice the beep, shut down, insert memory in it
    start it
no beep: memory wrong inserted, beep is different: memory is broken, beep is different: notice it, shut down
    insert graphiccard in it
    power on
it beeps: graphiccard is broken, no picture: graphic is broken
just tested it, no beep at all, LED code 29 on the board fuer 3 seconds and it shut downs

    from the manual:

    1. program cpu internal MTRR for 0-640k memory address
    2. initialize the apic for pentium class cpu
    3. program eraly chipset according to cmos setu pexample: onboarde IDE controller
    4. measure cpu speed

it seems the cpu is broken, but can a cpu be dead this easy ?

i still believe its the board...

Re: 3 weeks old hardware already broken ?

ive cleared the cmos through the button on the blackpanel and by removing the battery.

        i also re-seated the cpu.

        *edit*

I just found out that the pc remains on when i hold the cmos button at backpanel when booting up. if I release it, it shuts down

tested only with the cpu in it, everthing else is plugged off.
while this, it shows the 88 and later the 62 on the board

both numbers are not in the user manual. I assume that im reading it correctly ? from the right side, so that i can also read ultra durable 3.

if i read it from the other side the numbers are also not in the manual.

when i insert now a stick of the memory it shows me 25, which is:

        Early PCI initialization:
        -enumarate pci bus number
        - assign memory & I/O resource
        - search for a valid vga devicehttp://forums.tweaktown.com/f69/3-weeks-old-hardware-already-broken-39151/

so, he recognizes that the vga is missing...

if i insert now the vga, it shows the same

if i read the numbers from the other side, so that ultra durable 3 is upside down, it would be 52 which is:

test all memory ( clear all extended memory to 0 )

hmm..but maybe the numbers are all void while pressing the cmos button.

uh... you're supposed to clear cmos with computer OFF.

Perhaps the power supply has taken a nose-dive.

For motherboards that have a CMOS_SW button, press this button to clear the CMOS values (before doing this, please Turn off the computer and unplug the power cord).

Clearing the CMOS while the power is on to the motherboard can damage the motherboard.

Re: 3 weeks old hardware already broken ?

Have you setup the system outside of the case, and OFF the motherboard tray on a box or wooden table yet? I saw this suggested to you at XS, have you tested this yet?

I would set it up like that, with NOTHING else connected but your CPU/Heatsink, memory, and GFX Card. NO drives, fans, ect. I would also test using the Intel stock cooler if you have one, just to be sure your current one is not causing a short that only recently got bumped into shorting things out.

Do you have alternate hardware to test with, other PCI or PCIE GFX Cards, Memory, PSU's?

                      Heya,

                      soo...

I build the rig up outside of the motherboard on the gigabyte-box - same problems, nothing happened.

Then I went out to get a 4 Pin PC-Speaker. Found one! Plugged it in, listened - nothing.

Dead CPU ? Dead Motherboard ?

                      Going crazy here ;F

Re: 3 weeks old hardware already broken ?

I think I would also start out by testing with a different power supply unit as well. As lsdmeasap said: if you can borrow a different graphics card and/or CPU to test with they may also be the problem. Re setting the bios when the thing is plugged in may have created a whole new set of problems.

the rig should start also without vga.

ordered now a new board + cpu and psu, we will see tomorrow ...

Ahh sorry to hear nothing helped as of yet!

Good to see you have new hardware incoming for testing though, this should help you narrow down the problem pretty easy!

Let us know when you find out what was the problem
