  • Help overclocking i7-930 on a GA-EX58-UD5

Well I just jumped on the X58 band wagon LOL... here are spec the system specs

    I7-930 D0
    EX58-UD5 F12 bios.
    G.Skill Trident 6gb DDR3 2000 9-9-9-24 @1.6

Right now the only thing I have done was update bios from F7 to F12 ( was having trouble installing windows) Loaded Optimized defaults and setup raid. Right now my ram is Running at 1066. So if we can get that running up to at least 1600 or better then start with a mild overclock till I get a grasp on things. All bios settings are set to auto right now.

    Let the fun begin

what cooler do you have? also disabling floppy disk drive in bios helps with installing win7 re enable it later.....take a peak at my overclock settings in sig if you want to try those

you should clock to 3.8ghz easy, its best to set your cpu/qpi and ram voltages manually as auto will overvolt them

I tried your settings and they did not work for me gave me overclock failed. So I tried starting from scratch. Right now I'm sitting at 22x150 with HT off. Ill edit this post after I reboot and write down my settings. Do you know what the max safe voltages are for these cpus?

Cheers mate. Yeah I saw your post I was gonna say hey but got distracted with this lol... how you liken it? Im love this so far. Its replacing my p45. I might get a another case and stuff and make it a server or something. I was a little shocked when I saw the VID on my chip 1.26875. At least all the temp sensors work on this cpu compared to my q9650

Me thinks the i7-930 has a lot of potential when properly oc'ed.

I want one of those Ultra Extreme 120's (all copper) Some day I'll get one when I build my own i7. BTW what fans are you using on it?

you might need more cpu voltage with a 930 chip normally around 1.250000 for 4ghz so i would start with 1.20000v for 3.8ghz,keep turbo and multithreading enabled too you should be able to clock with those on,for qpi voltage i wouldnt go over 1.4000v you wont need anything that high round 1.3-1.360000 max and for cpu voltage 1.2-1.3200000v max with a D0 chip,as for ram voltage dont go any higher than 1.6v..hope this helps, also your cpu will only throttle when cpu voltage is on auto(not recommended) or on its normal setting

Hey LSD Im not having any real issues as of yet.. Main issue is tring to learing the x58 rules. Like max safe 24/7 volts, Vtt rules is it like the P45 keep vtt .05 under Vcore. Also vcore it self warren is suggesting 1.2-1.25v vcore up to 4ghz. My chips ViD is 1.26875 for 2.8ghz. Here are the settings im have set in my bios right now that I will be testings. Any suggestions or tips are greatly appreciated. My goal here is to push this thing to the max safe 24/7 o.c. and run ram at or close to its rated speed.

Also whats this qpi and uncore speed? whats the max that they can be pushed? Another thing is what the Tjmax for these chips real temp says its 97c.

QPI/Vtt must remain within .5 of the Vdimm, that is all. You can use above Vcore without issue.

Vcore needed for 4Ghz or above all depends on the CPU only, not just stepping. You may need anywhere from 1.2-1.45 for 4Ghz or above

QPI you can use any multi, just try to keep this under 8GT/s

Uncore must always be at least 2 x memory multi, or above such as 2x +1 or 2x +2

Realtemp should pickup the correct value from the MSR's, it is 100C so sounds about right to me.

Settings look all ok for now, are you still pushing? May want to try x17-x18 uncore, sometimes this is better for stability than x16
