  • Overclocking i7 930 and Kingston HyperX with X58A-UD7

My ideal goal would be CPU 4.0-4.2 + HT with memory running at 2000MHz CL8. I know this is really hard to achieve so I need all the help I can get .

    This is my hardware:

    CPU: Intel Core i7 930
    CPU Cooler: Prolimatech Mega Shadow
    Motherboard: Gigabyte X58A-UD7
    BIOS: Official F6
    Memory: Kingston HyperX 6GB DDR3 2000 CL8
Hard Drive: Intel X25-M Postville 80GB SSD
Graphics Card: ATI HD5450 (waiting for GTX480)
    Case: Lian Li TYR PC-X1000
    Power Supply: Enermax Revolution85+ 1050W
    OS: Win 7 64

LinX just crashed after 2.5 hours.

Re: Overclocking i7 930 and Kingston HyperX with X58A-UD7

WOW, 2.5 hours of LinX is WAY MUCH!!

Running your memory at 2000Mhz isn't ideal for X58 for 24/7 use, because you have to have the NB so high. Have you read/heard discussions into that?

For the above, I would suggest you need more IOH and more Uncore Freq (Maybe x17-x18).

I really need to see your memory timings as well, if you have them on auto that is probably not good, for performance I mean. If you want to try 200Mhz for short test or benching you will need WAY more QPI/Vtt, which is why that speed is not good for 24/7 use.

Let me know your thoughts after hearing that, I can help you get 2000Mhz probably if you want to push voltages, but it wont be something you can use 24/7 or for 40 LinX runs.

Re: Overclocking i7 930 and Kingston HyperX with X58A-UD7

I'm looking for max 24/7 save speeds. 4.0GHz HT would be enough for me. More, if possible, is welcome. I used auto memory settings for the above test. Memory was running at 1528Mhz. I've tested the sticks with Memtest86+ (2000MHz 8-8-8-24) with no problems. What would you advise for 24/7 use?

How long did you run the 2000Mhz test mentioned above? What memory multi and Bclk were you using?

It is possible, just often not easy for users to get going which is why I suggest against it. Since you already had it going you may be ok, if you want to try to keep it going give me your settings used for 2000Mhz previously and I will advise back what you can try

Re: Overclocking i7 930 and Kingston HyperX with X58A-UD7

I tested the memory with a different i7 930 that I sold. Yesterday I bought a new i7 930 so all my old settings are useless. Should I start overclocking the CPU until I'm stable at 4.0 or 4.2 with low memory settings?

Ya, go ahead and do that. Then once you get a bit stable, see if you can get 2000Mhz working again and then I will help you from there.

When is my CPU stable? I can use Prime95, OCCT, IBT or LinX. Which settings do you recommend?

Re: Overclocking i7 930 and Kingston HyperX with X58A-UD7

It is stable when you pass the above mentioned tests, like 12 hours of prime or 10 passes of LinX.

What do you mean, what settings do I recommend? Sorry I thought you knew how to set things up, and was going to do that with this different CPU and then I would help you once you got going.

Do you need help with initial setup???

Hold on a minute. A few posts back you said you had this memory at 2000 already once, but sold that CPU so was using new settings, ect.

Now you ask for settings and how to overclock? Which is it, do you know how or not? Not meaning to sound rude or anything, as I will help you, but you just confuse me on what you know and don't by the way you say different things each time you post.

The ram wont be in the way, just dont set it to 2000 yet unless you think you can get it to boot.

My goal is to reach 4.0 - 4.2 with HT enabled. I've read a lot of overclocking guides. In these guide I often read this:

Not wanting to waste time, I drop the frequency of the memory to 1333MHz or lower. After I ensure the CPU at 4GHz is stable, I can then raise the memory with specific ratios to see if the memory can go higher.

I could set the following settings in the bios: 21x 200 (4200) and memory multi 10x (2000MHz). I think this is really hard to tune. Wouldn't it be wise to first overclock the cpu to 4.0 - 4.2 HT and then see how fast I can get the ram to work without for example use very high qpi/vtt?

If I'm wrong, how would you overclock my system?

After 4 hours (6 passes) of Memtest86+ v4.00 I stopped the test, no errors. Memory speed 1910 8-8-8-24. I started LinX but it failed after 1 minute.
