  • Advice needed for a GA-x48-DS4

Hi all. I was hoping to get some simple advice on optimum setup for my bios as im getting very poor performance from my board.
    My specs are
    GA-x48-DS4 (REV 1.3 with F1 BIOS)
    Q6700 with Zalman 9500 cooler
    4gigOCZ Gold Edition (2x2GB) DDR2 PC2-8500C5
Nvidia 9800+GTX superclocked (soon to be changed for an ATI card)
    Auzentech Xmeridian sound card
    1000w Enermax Galaxy psu.
    Vista 64 Ultimate

Im very dissapointed overall with this new setup as its actualy worse than my 680I in terms of perfomance but looking through the BIOS there is a huge dif from the EVGA bios which was simple to use.
Im not looking to overclock yet i just want the best settings possible for my machine. Overclocking will come laterwhen im more experienced using this board.
If anyone can give me a 'Step By Step best sttings guide' or something id be very greatful.
    Thanks in advance
    Sheffield :)

Re: Advice needed for a GA-x48-DS4

In what way do you feel your system is slower? Is it just the "feel" of it or have you run any comparative benchmarks such as SuperPI 1M, Everest RAM benchmark etc?

The only advice I can give really is to:

Make sure disk caching is enabled. Go to Device Manager, right click your hard disk and enable it under the Policies tab.

Set the correct memory timings for your RAM in the MIT section of the BIOS

Make sure the right RAM divider is set correctly so that your RAM runs at or close to its rated DDR-1066.

There is also a BIOS F3b available, which may help performance (or may not). This update gives the board 45nm E0 stepping CPU support for later upgrades.

If you fill in this BIOS template, we can see your settings and suggest how to tune them.

Note, this template is from a DQ6, but most of it should be relevant. Anything that differs, you can edit to match your BIOS. Surrounding the template with the [CODE] tags when you post it makes it an easy to read scrollable box.

Re: Advice needed for a GA-x48-DS4

Thankyou for that psycho101. It definatly takes much longer to boot and i have to wait a little before i can use the internet where as before it booted and i was ready. The only benchmark ive run was 3d mark 06. I know its not the best thing to use but i get 450 less than with my 680I. Ill fill out that template and post my results.
One quick question. The ram divider thing. Im sorry but im not sure what that means. Would you be able to tell me then ill check that too.
Thanks again for the help. I really appreciate it.

Re: Advice needed for a GA-x48-DS4

From filling out the template it'll be easy to see which divider you're using.

A divider basically decides how fast to run the RAM and is tied to Frontside Bus frequency.

If you have for example a processor on a 200MHz FSB, and some DDR-800 then the RAM divider used will be 4.00. 200 * 4.00 = 800.

In truth, it realy should be called a 2.00 divider, and the 2.00 shoild be called a 1.00 divider, as PC2 RAM runs at an actual clock rate of half its rated DDR speed, it just transmits data "twice per 1MHz". Don't worry about this bit though, it's all pretty academic.

Depending on how long you've had Vista running on this board, you may yet see some boot speed reduction as Superfetch does its job. Commonly accessed foles are cached in RAM to speed up loading times etc, it just takes time for Vista to build up a list.

Did you do a fresh install after changing the board? If not I'd advise it, as changing a main board without re-installing is like doing major surgery with no anaesthetic... not recommended.

Hi again. Thanks for the explanation. Very informative and very helpful.
When i installed the new board i did a clean instal of Vista and its been running about 4 days now. Im not sure if thats long enough to get a decent list as im pretty new to vista only using it for a few weeks before i got the new motherboard.

Re: Advice needed for a GA-x48-DS4

Aha. You have your RAM slightly underclocked. It's running PC2-6400 rather than PC2-8500.

Change your BIOS settings to the following and your lost performance should return:

            Code:
            MB Intelligent Tweaker (MIT)
            Robust Graphics Booster...........:Auto
            CPU Clock Ratio...................:10x

            CPU Host Clock Control............:Enabled
            CPU Host Frequency(Mhz)...........:266
            PCI Express Frequency (Mhz).......: [[COLOR="red"]100[/COLOR]]
            C.I.A.2...........................:Disabled
            Performance Enhance...............:Standard
            System Memory Multiplier (SPD)....: [[COLOR="Red"]4.00A[/COLOR]]
            Memory Frequency(Mhz).............:1066
            DRAM Timing Selectable ...........:Manual
            Standard Timing Control
CAS Latency Time (tCL)............:5 set this and the other three timings all manually to what is here.

            DRAM RAS# Precharge (tRP).........:6

            Advanced Timing Control
ACT to ACT Delay(tRRD)............:3 auto These 8 timings are OK on Auto.

            That should do the trick.

In case the actual settings on your board are different from what I am assuming, basically you need to change the value of "System Memory Multiplier (SPD)....: [?]" until the Memory Frequency(Mhz) section reads 1066 next to it.

My BIOS has a setting called (g)MCH Latch which can be left on [Auto] while changing the System Memory Multiplier settings. If your board has that entry, set to auto. Also note where I have entered "4.00A" next to "System Memory Multiplier (SPD)" your value may be the same or just "4.00. Either way, having a memory frequency of 1066 is the goal, so adjust accordingly.

I've highlighted in red what you should change, including correct timings of 5-6-6-18 for your RAM, and a slight increase in voltage to the recommended 2.1V (you are allowed, by OCZ to increase to 2.15 but it's not needed).

Let me know if that scores any better in 3D Mark. It should at least increase over all score by the missing 400 or so.

Right, i made the changes you suggested and although i have had a slight increase in my 3dmark score its still well below my old 680I board and still noticably slower in general.
I still also cant get into the Advance Bios features no matter how many times i try.
I dont think this board likes me very much..lol..

Just had another go at getting the advanced options in Bios but no joy. Also i notcied that the memory has 2 speeds next to it.
                First is 800 then 1066.
                Which is the actual speed???
                Jeeeeeeeeeez im such a noob.....

Re: Advice needed for a GA-x48-DS4

Na your not a noob Sheffield. We all started somewere. I would recommend updating to the latest BIOS F3B. Were there are two speeds 800 then 1066 1066 is next to the 800 on the right??? If so then its probably not dulled like the 800 which means that 800 is what your MB is detecting to be the "standard" speed (so to speak) and 1066 is what you have manually told it it is. (sometime the MB gets it wrong)

Silly question but did you do a fresh install of windows with the new MB and all that?

Also make sure your running your memory in Dual Channel Mode. IE put the two sticks in the same color slots. Slot 1 and 3

                    Thanks for your reply NimrodAUS
Yes i did a fresh instal of windows when i put the new board in and ive got the ram in the same colour slots (slot 1 and slot 3). When i boot up it tells me my memory Dual Channel Interleaved. Im assuming that this means i have them in the right slots but i could be wrong..lol..
Also you are correct what you say about the memory speed. 800 on the left and 1066 on the right. Thanks NimrodAUS. I appreciate you taking the time to help me.
I also appreciate you saying im not a noob. I was ok with my last board but i feel very out of my depth with this one. I suppose its a lesson for me to update my hardware more frequently so im not so out of touch when i do update :)
                    Thanks again.

                    Sheffield :)

Re: Advice needed for a GA-x48-DS4

                      Dual channel interleaved is perfect.

I'm at a loss as to why you seem to be getting less performance. It's a shame, but there is a nice easy (ish) remedy.... Your Q6700 should be more than happy to run at 3.2GHz, maybe on stock cooling but keep an eye on temps. X48 should handle Quad clocking nicely, and your new ATI card would be well at home with a CPU speed of at least 3-3.2GHz.

Which card are you getting BTW?

The 4890 overclocks really good, possibly to 1GHz core with some aftermarket cooling. 4870's are nice and cheap now, and almost as good.

If you're on a budget like me, a 4850 is sweet, clocks well etc, and the new 4770 is almost as good, but cheaper still. Either of these won't be a step up from your 9800GTX+ though. the 4850 beats it sometimes, other times the Nvidia card pulls ahead.

You aren't a "noob". I hate that word, after playing World of Warcraft for 3 years, I cringe at the mere sight of it. Everyone is new at some time, and the X48 boards are enthusiast oriented. They have loads of settings, some of which you may never need, unless you're going for over-clocking world records. You're doing just fine. As long as you're learning, what more can you do?

Re: Advice needed for a GA-x48-DS4

Well Put Psycho101. The 4800 Series ATI cards rock. I also have the HD4850 and it was a good step up from my old 8800GT Nvidia. I am also at a loss to understand why your system is noticably slower. What I can suggest is running a Disk Proformance tool like HD TUNE and post a pic of the test and let us analys it a bit. HD Tune it will give us an idea anyway. Did you update your BIOS yet? If not I would do that anyway. Follow these steps http://forums.tweaktown.com/f69/bios...h-guide-27576/ .
Also just confirm in windows by right clicking on Computer and going to properties what windows see's your CPU Clock speed @. I have had a wiered thing happen with X64 Vista the first time and everything was super slow.

Hi, sorry for my late reply. Been really busy at work.
Psycho101. Thanks for the advice about ocing it but before i do im going to give it a little longer, see if something else can be done.
The card im hoping to get will be the ATI 4870 or possibly the 4890 if funds permit.
Well when i say funds permit i really mean if the wife lets me.
NimrodAUS. Thanks for the links. Ill try HD Tune and see what it tells me. Il also have a look at that guid and then flash my bios. Thanks again for that.
Lsdmeasap (great name by the way)Hopefull the bios update will sort me out and yes, thanks to Psycho101 and NimrodAUS im learning a great deal :)
Ill post back when ive done the bios.
                            Thanks again guys

Hi again all. Right, im about to update my BIOS (finaly got enough time from work,, slave drivers they are!!!...lol) from F1 to the latest Beta and im just wondering if there is anything i should bare in mind.
Im using a 1gig FAT32 patition on another hdd to do the update.
Ive downloaded the lates BIOS from Gigabyte (motherboard_bios_ga-x48-ds4_1.3_f3b)
When i update the bios ill be unplugging my C drive just to be safe so as far as i can see im all set.
Are there any other steps i need to take to make sure it goes smoothly and without incidents.
Sorry for all these question, i guess im just nervous something will go wrong.
                              Thanks in advance.
