  • Processor speed keeps dropping when not in use.

I can't seem to find the setting in the Bios to make it stop. Anyone? I have it oc'ed from 2.6 to 3.2. Whenever the processor isn't in use it falls to 2.4. Where can i turn this off?

    Specs:
    GA EP45C-DS3R
    Q9400
    2x2 ddr2 800 gig corsair ram
    9800GTX+
    750W PSU

I think the processor drops the multiplier to 6 whenever it is idle. Less power, less heat, longer life.

Why do you want to prevent that?

I believe this is a feature on all energy saver boards.

It doesn't really drop performance, but reduces power usage, reduces heat and extends component life.

Caused by Intel's CPU "speedstep" function. Disable mobo bios "CPU EIST" option to stop it happening?

As others have already said, there is no need to disable this feature.

As soon as the CPU is loaded, the multiplier will kick back up to whatever you have it set in the BIOS. Speedstep will save you money on your power bill, and help prolong the life of your CPU, due to it idling at lower temperatures, and alowing the processor to cool more rapidly after loading has stopped.

As stated above disabling the setting "CPU EIST" and "C1E" I think its called in the BIOS will stop it from doing it. The only real benifit is saving power.

Re: Processor speed keeps dropping when not in use.

The only real benefit is not saving power. Speed step increases the CPU temperature delta. Ie the difference from full load temps to idle temps.

For example, if you have SS off, when you cut the load on a CPU running 3GHz at 100%, temperatures will drop much more slowly than if SS was able to drop its speed to 2GHz. At 2GHz they would also drop lower.

It's a useful feature, and shouldn't be disabled. It's actually alot more overclock friendly than Cool-And-Quiet, it won't mess with vCore if it detects modified processor settings.

Why would you want to use more power and create more heat than you have to? Current economic climate is grim, so every penny counts.

Yes the obvious as well. I only made the comment because it has been widely documented that on an overclocked system, Speed Step muckin with your Multi and what not is not a good way to get a stable overclocked system. Some people it does work "ok".

If your overclock is not effected by it then by all means leave it on. I dont turn my computer on to leave it sitting idle. Its either Gaming or encoding so doesnt make a damm bit of differents to me. Burn the Tree's I say.

Re: Processor speed keeps dropping when not in use.

Depending on what you use it for, yes it is more or less useful.

It's always recommended to turn it off while over clocking, as it may possibly cause issues. It has improved in its different versions though. For instance it will no longer drop vCore if it detects a manually set voltage, an altered (less than maximum) multiplier or a different FSB than standard.

Always worth enabling if you can get it to work. If you come up with stability issues then turn it off, without question.

As the OP was worried about not seeing his actual processor speed, I'd say that's a bad reason to turn off speed step. Nobody should have a copy of CPU-Z open all the time staring at their clock speed (a slight exaggeration maybe). Speed Step will do its job fine when you load your system, and many speed reporting tools will load the processor before displaying the frequency reading. CPU-Z and some Windows dialog boxes don't. That's not a bad thing.

turn off c1e and eist to give you full processor speed all the time, also if your running windows 7 you will need to select high performance profile in power saving options or it will still throttle the cpu the same as c1e will, personally i use c1e and eist all the time and have no problems with stability
