  • My UD3R computer is FREEZING and driving me MAD

First of all hello, I am new here, and new to the computer building scene.

I have just finished constructing a new computer intended to replace my aging 2003 dell workstation. parts are as follows:

Intel Q6600 2.4ghz quad core processor
    Gigabyte UD3R motherboard
    G.Skill DDR1000 ram (4x2gb=8gb)
    Western Digital 500gb 7200rpm HD
    Samsung DVDRW
    EVGA GTX260 core 216 superclocked
    Antec Quattro 1000W psu
    Antec 1200 Case

Running on Windows vista home premium.

First of all the system runs fantastic. Great performance... that is until it CRASHES. The computer has a tendency to completely freeze for no reason. Remains unresponsive to any keystrokes or anything. Just freezes. This has happened during a screen saver, during nothing, during gaming, etc. Just freezes.

I know the computer isn't overheating, cpu is running at a low 35c, graphics around 50c, and the antec 1200 case is a windtunnel.

I have inquired on several other forums and I am now led to believe my memory is not configured properly in the BIOS. I don't speak computer so this is all very new and hard for me to understand. The gigabyte manual doesn't seem to cater to the unknowledgeable so I wasn't able to figure this out myself.

I was able to find the memory timings and fix these to the proper values, but the system still crashes. I personally don't think there is anything wrong with the sticks, and doubt that two separately packaged pairs would be reacting the same way (i've been switching them in and out and still incurred the problem).

I have run memtest and windows memory diagnostic, with several errors.

The one thing I haven't been able to check and fix is the voltage on the memory. I was hoping this is where you guys could help me, as I think it might be set up incorrectly. From what I understand memory can be extremely picky about these settings. Also if there are other settings I could tweak within the memory to make them more stable, and more importantly not freeze my computer, that would be ideal.

This is really bumming me out so any assistance would really be appreciated.

    Thank you.

8GB of ram generally needs a lot more tweaking than say 2GB of ram to run with stability.

Also Vista will quickly find fault with Ram if there are any problems as it uses ASLR.

I know you have Ram rated at 1000Mhz, but are you trying to run it at that, or at 800Mhz?

Could you link to or post the max voltage rating for your Ram.

For starters a couple of settings you need to change manually in the MIT section of the bios.

    1) Performance Enhance = Standard
    2) tRFC (Refresh to ACT Delay) = 70
    3) If the Ram is rated say for a Max of 2.1volts, please try it at 1.9 and 2.0volts for now.
    4) Test with Memtest or Vista mem Diagnostics. Although memtest does give you a bit more feedback.
    5) Also if the rams main timings are something like 5-4-4-12, try altering them to 5-5-5-18

Re: My UD3R computer is FREEZING and driving me MAD

Thank you for your suggestions. My ram timings are set to what is written on the stick, 5-5-5-15. What would you change them to make them more stable and I assume, slower for the time being?

I currently have all 8gb installed. They pass memtest but I am still freezing. I have just reseated the CPU to see if that makes any difference. DRAM voltage is at 1.8V but I am going to change to 2V to see if it might work better? It is rated at 2.1V.

      performance enhance is on standard

I'll let you know how things turn out, thanks again

Whats's your MCH set at? If its stock then thats prob your issue. You need prob 1.28v or more for 8GB ram depending on the FSB. I have to run 1.32v on my 2x2GB of ram at 420FSB or I have stability issues.

Also try the ram at 2.06v
        New Q9650, Gigabyte UD3P, 4GB OCZ Platinum, Asus TOP 4850, Antec TP3 550W, Vista 64 SP1/XP SP3.

Re: My UD3R computer is FREEZING and driving me MAD

Thank you for your reply. I have changed settings to MCH 1.28V and DRAM 2.06V and am running memtest. Looks good so far.

Answer me this though, because I can't figure it out. I just had the settings at MCH 1.05V and Dram 1.9V and memtest checked out, but my computer still freezes. I try memtest again and the second time, tons of errors? Just odd...

I'll see how these new settings perform, hopefully my computer will not freeze

Do you think it will be necessary to reinstall windows? I heard from somebody that windows pulls info off the ram during info so if it is set at the incorrect settings and I am now adjusting them, it could corrupt files in windows or something?? Sounds like bullocks to me but just checking.

Thanks again for the repies, please keep them coming!

Ya, no need to reinstall windows!!! When you say Passes Memtest, you do mean memtest86+ right? If so, you are running at least 5 full passes right>

If you need further help please do link us to your ram, and give us the full settings you are using >>>
