  • New UD3R Build - Cannot Boot From Old HDD

    Folks,

I'm assembling a system for a client who wanted it to boot to his old ATAPI (Ribbon Cable) HDD loaded with XP Priemium. Edit - It's loaded with all his programs also.

    No will do.

I have his new WD 640GB HDD loading with another XP Home SP2 copy as I type here and will pop in the chipset drivers when it's done.

The old HDD a 40GB Seagate came out of a Gateway 2.x Pentium4.

Any ideas how to get it to happen.

    Thanks

Re: New UD3R Build - Cannot Boot From Old HDD

    Try this:

Set up only the target HD and optical drive.

In BIOS, set CD as first boot device.

Make sure you have his XP serial and any drivers that need to be installed with F6.

Start from the Windows boot CD in the normal way, putting in any drivers that need to be installed with F6.

Proceed as a normal installation to the point where you press F8 to continue — do it (Earlier you'll see the option to repair with Recovery Console — ignore this.)

You should now be given the option to repair the existing Windows installation or install a new copy.

    Choose repair

Windows should now re-install with the boot sector and drivers for the new PC.

Note you will be asked to re-enter the serial etc.

If it doesn't give you the repair option after pressing F8 (it should), just exit with F3 and no harm will have been done.

This is a good way to recover from a serious XP error, as well.

Edit: You could probably also ghost the old 40GB to a new larger drive and do the same process on it.

A repair install would be best, but you will have to reinstall ALL Windows updates/SP's again.

If you need me to link you to some pages about a repair install let me know. As said above, repair install is NOT Repair console

Sorry, should have mentioned that it will re-install the OS as it was when issued — was trying to talk and type at the same time.

The fix here is to update to SP3 after the repair or, as I did when setting up a new board last week, use Nlite to make a new XP setup CD with SP3 and the new system's drivers in it.

Repair should then bring it almost up to date.

            Thanks All,

I ended up with the repair install mentioned by Lsdmeasap. I tried to avoid it but no go.
