• GA-EP45-UD3R not using my BIOS settings

I built a new system using the GA-EP45-UD3R, a Q6600 processor, and 8 gigs of ram. I overclocked it to 3.0ghz with the default voltage and everything was fine except that the system took a long time to power down after choosing to shut it off (it would log out of windows, monitor would shut off, but the system power would stay on for another minute before shutting down). I decided to upgrade to the F4 BIOS (was on F3) to see if this would make any difference.

The flash went fine and all was well. Booted up the system, loaded optimized defaults and then changed my setting back to where they were before. Ran the system fine for several hours. However, today, I turn on the system and it booted up at 9 X 400. Went into the BIOS and my settings were still the same. Changed it back to 9 X 266 and the system boots up at 9 X 317. Also, the memory is running at 952 (2:3) even though I set it to run at 667.

So basically, the BIOS is ignoring my settings. I've loaded optimized defaults several times, but it still does the same thing. What should I do?

Re: GA-EP45-UD3R not using my BIOS settings

Well, I solved the original problem I was having. I read somewhere else to unplug the power cable and plug it back in if BIOS settings weren't matching what I was seeing in Windows. Sure enough, this worked. Unfortunately, now I'm having lots of other problems that I'm trying to figure out. The screen will freeze after running Prime95 for a few minutes and the motherboard is making the "short continuos beeps" noise which is supposed to indicate a power problem.

how many beeps is system making?

Re: GA-EP45-UD3R not using my BIOS settings

I'm not sure, I never counted. I would guess 8. I'm typing this message on the computer right now. After the 8 beeps process happens about 10-20 times, I can get back into Windows. All runs normal until I try Prime95 and the screen freezes, then I have to manually power the system down and we're back to the 8 beeps cycle.

so problem only happens when you use prime95? Have you tried increasing your CPU Voltage? Also have your run Memtest? Test your memory?

Re: GA-EP45-UD3R not using my BIOS settings

Many short beeps ususally means a Power issue as you said, but that often can be power OR incorrect voltages or ram timings.

8GB of ram is not going to work on Auto, as you likely know. And do keep in mind all BIOS's are different so if you last settings were stable you still may have to tweak them again this time around after your flash

Let us see what you are using and We'll see what we can advise >>>

Please do also give us a link to your exact ram used. Thanks

Re: GA-EP45-UD3R not using my BIOS settings

              Here is the memory I am using: Newegg.com - CORSAIR 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory - Desktop Memory

I did leave most of the voltages on auto. The only changes I made were to set the CPU to the VID (1.2875) and the DRAM Voltage to 1.9. I have been reading many of your posts on why the other memory and MCH Core voltages need to be increased.

The situation has changed from when I first posted, as I've been testing for hours. I started testing the system using one stick of memory at a time and found that it wouldn't post with one of the sticks. All of the others load fine and don't give any errors on 1 pass of Memtest+ and also pass IntelBurn Test. I would think it is time to chalk it up to a bad memory stick and move on.

My concern is that I was able to pass the built in Vista Memory tester and I ran Prime95 for 5 hours without a problem when I had all 4 sticks installed. I've never dealt with a bad memory stick before. Is it common that I would be able to pass the Vista Memory diagnostic, but then have the stick die the next day?

Is it possible or likely that there is a different problem going on that caused the initial freeze and when the system loaded using settings that I had not specified that it fried the one stick with it's overclocked settings?

Perhaps it was the inadequate voltage with the auto settings that caused the initial freeze and led to the subsequent problems?

Re: GA-EP45-UD3R not using my BIOS settings

Ok, I've been running tests all day. I haven't had any issues today or ever when I did not have the stick of ram inserted that is now bad. I've run many passes of IntelBurn Test and have passed a few MemTest+ runs. I'm going to leave MemTest+ running overnight.

I'd still appreciate if someone would answer the questions in my previous post.

Here are the BIOS (f3) settings that I'm currently using. Are there any changes that I should make now or will need to make once my bad ram is replaced? I'm currently running 2 x 2 gigs and will be running 4 x 2.

Yes, it is possible as those test depending on how long you ran them and how may hav never used the bad bits in the one dead stick

For sure sounds to me like you should RMA the set that had a bad one, be sure you get the same model as a replacement

This would be optimal for 2x2 >>>

Re: GA-EP45-UD3R not using my BIOS settings

Thanks for the suggestions. I'm more concerned with stability than getting every bit of performance out of the system, so should I worry about messing with the Driving Strength Profiles and the Channel A/B Timing settings?

You said the above settings would be optimal for 2x2. Would you suggest that I make changes to your above settings when I get the replacement RAM back and am running 4x2?

Yes, Static tRead Value has the MOST impact on performance then any other setting. Aside from MAIN timings, so at least try to set that as low as you can with some testing as you go

Yes, 8GB will need a higher set of timings, for sure more trfc, and maybe more trtp, twr, twtr, and likely more MCH Voltage and MCH Skew
