• Gigabyte GA-EP45-DS3R Overheating?

My new system setup is as follows:
GIGABYTE GA-EP45-DSR3 (BIOS F10)
INTEL Core 2 Duo E8500
CORSAIR TWIN2X4096-6400C4DHX (4GB)
COOLER MASTER GeminII S
HIS Radeon HD 4850 IceQ4 Turbo
ENERMAX PRO82+ 525W
WD Caviar SE16 640GB
LG GGC-H20L
Windows XP Professional with SP2

MoutainMods Ascension Case
2 x Scythe SY1225SL12M 120mm Slipstream
2 x Antec 761345-75080-6 80mm 3-Speed

The ONLY changes I have made to the BIOS so far are as follows:

MB Intelligent Tweaker (M.I.T.)
Performance Enhance...................: [Standard]

PC Health Status
CPU Smart Fan Control.................: [Enabled]

The Problem:
My new system crashes after playing just about any (recent-ish 2006-2008) game for more than an hour. It does NOT crash after running Prime95 for 24 hours, though.

According to Core Temp, the CPU never really gets above 50 degrees. The GPU doesn't get too hot either (HIS IceQ4). The HDD is okay too.

But once I was playing and Half Life 2, and it started jerking / jolting / massively stuttering, so I quickly exited the game.

EasyTune6 was open at the time, and the CPU temp was only 40 degrees, BUT the SYSTEM temp was 45 degrees.

Could a SYSTEM tempurature of 45 degrees be crashing my system? Any suggestions would be endlessly helpful. Thanks in advance.

Kind Regards,
Eric

Re: Gigabyte GA-EP45-DS3R Overheating?

Well with 4GB you need to set your ram voltage (Normally 2.0-2.1) and set MCH voltage to 1.2-1.3 (1.24-1.28 normally good)

You may or may not need or want to set other settings. Let me know if that helps you any, if not I will give you a full list of settings to use

Lsdmeasap,

Thank you for responding so quickly. Yes, I would love to have some ideas for the other settings. Thank you.

I think it worked! I set the DRAM voltage to 2.1v, based on Corsair's specs. I also the MCH Core to 1.280v.

Why would the system crash (or appear to overheat) when the voltages are too low? Thanks, again.

Kind Regards,
Eric

Re: Gigabyte GA-EP45-DS3R Overheating?

Yes, the system would crash at to low of voltages, but not appear to overheat. What are you using to look at temps and what temp is it that has you worried?

If you would like full setting please do link me to your ram and fill this in with what you are using and I will advise back >>>

Re: Gigabyte GA-EP45-DS3R Overheating?

I had EasyTune6 open once when the system was acting funny, and the motherboard tempurature was around 45 degrees, and I thought maybe I had a bad mobo. But I guess not, though.

Here's the link to the ram:

Re: Gigabyte GA-EP45-DS3R Overheating?

Ya, that is a normal temp for your motherboard.

Here is optimal ranges for your settings from what you gave above >>>

From your BIOS settings you give, looks like you need to load optimized defaults, you did not do this after you updated your BIOS did you? If not, which looks like, please do so. Load optimized, set your ram voltage only then save/apply/reboot BACK to the BIOS. You MUST do that so you can set your SATA/Disk settings again before you try to load windows, and of course any and all other settings you wish to change.

That is a critical part of updating your BIOS, and should be done each and every time you flash your BIOS. If you did that, or all those driving strengths/channel timings and such are indeed on their own pages as shown below you can ignore my thoughts/comments about all that! >>

Re: Gigabyte GA-EP45-DS3R Overheating?

Thank you for all your help, Lsdmeasap. Everything seems to be running smoothly except when I set the Static tRead Value manually. What do you mean by the following? Thank you, again.

Static tRead Value...: 6/7-10 333/B MCH - 8/9-12 400/D MCH

Kind Regards,
Eric

Re: Gigabyte GA-EP45-DS3R Overheating?

static read is the range you can try ... between 7 to 10 .. at the (G)MCH Frequency Latch 333.. and the 2.00B , 2.40B or 3.20B .. some thing like that

and the 400 is end with D
