    Re: Is my system Underperforming?

soldier, 4800+ sounds fine for an x1950pro @ 1280x1024. Eg:
X-bit labs - ATI Radeon X1950 Pro against Nvidia GeForce 7900 GS (page 18)
I think it's more dependant on gfx card than CPU.
    Intel E8400 E0 3GHz @ 4.0GHz (444x9) stable (provisionally), max 4.4GHz (489x9), Zalman CNPS 9700 (core temp 46c @ max load @ 4.0GHz),
    Gigabyte GA-P35-S3G F5b BIOS + 40mm fan on MCH, Geil Black Dragon DDR2-PC8500C5 (2x1GB) @ 1066MHz (444x2.4)
Sapphire ATI HD 4850 Dual Slot Cooler (64c @ max load), Dell 3007WFP 30" (2560x1600)
    Seagate 500GB SATA2 7200rpm 32MB cache, Samsung 500GB SATA2 7200rpm 16MB cache, LG GH22LP20 22x DVD+/-RW
Corsair TX 650W, Antec Three Hundred + 2x120mm front fans, WinXP SP3 Home

        Re: Is my system Underperforming?

OK I believe i found my problem, or I hope. Someone suggested to do an HD test. My drive is a western digital so i went to their website and downloaded their diagnostic tool.

I ran the quick test and it errored:

06-Quick Test on drive 1 did not complete! Status code = 07 (Failed read test element), Failure Checkpoint = 97 (Unknown Test) SMART self-test did not complete on drive 1!

The strange thing is I had windows run the scan and fix errors feature by right click on a drive and then going properties -> scan for disk errors. Since it was my only drive i had to restart. Before hitting the user list it did the scan, and completed successfully.

I still think it is my harddrive that is the problem. I remember downloading off newsgroups and having corrupt iso's after quickpar. I got one iso created and burnt it, but the app wouldnt install and would hang midway

          Re: Is my system Underperforming?

Ah, this sounds like it may be similar to a problem I had, kawai. My HD was failing with lots of read errors, causing zillions of retrys by Windows for each attempt to read, or something like that. This was generating zillions of hardware interupts that Windows hardware interupt handler had to process using CPU cycles. Looking in the Windows Error log showed LOTS of HD errors. Anyway, my systems was running REALLY SLOW, and I went through the whole thing of checking CPU, mobo and memory before I finally worked it out.

I think I realised the problem was HD when I looked in ProcessExplorer and saw the kernel process so busy. Ran the HD diag tool from the manufacturer and sure enough found loads of errors. Replaced the HD and problem gone. Fortunately for me it was not the system disk, and I was able to recover all my data slowly.

@soldier - link to the the X-bit labs review woirks fine for me behind a pretty strict corporate firewall.

So it is a faulty HD, swapped it with a spinpoint f1 1tb, got 15.6 sec in superpi and 26 sec in wPrime. Tons better than before at least.Off to rma with the WD

Nice to see you found your issue Kawai! I would have never guessed that, but know I will keep that in mind if I see a similar issue!!!

Nice, I recently picked up a q9550 from dell.ca for $220 canadian :). So im keeping this thread alive for OC'ing my q9550. I'm planning to do a safe OC though , just to get fsb:memory 1:1. Thus im shooting for 8.5 x 400 = 3.4ghz.
