Re: GIGABYTE Latest Beta BIOS
Hi,
I'm using the GA-X79-UD3 (F11b) and a i7 3820. I have this issue with 1.25 strap:
When using the 1.25 strap I need to manually set vcore to 1.265v in order to boot successfully.
This is necessary even if cpu multi is set low (28x or less) with turbo multi all at 28x or less as well.
It seems that 'power-on' vcore is 1.22v and this is too little for some CPUs to boot with the 1.25 strap setting.
Setting vcore manually prevents using SVID and SVID offset , so the CPU idles at 1.265v which is not ideal.
Is there is some workaround?
The ability to change the power-on vcore would be an excellent addition. An alternative might be to have power-on
vcore set to 1.3v like some Asus boards do.

But there were NO major malfunctions I could detect to cause this and my prime question is why is the second [back-up] Bios only with a very old Bios version [maybe the first I put in when I got the board? Is there a way to have both have the new - and not to loose the settings I've entered in the CMOS table?! Thanks much.
I suggest you try to reflash the main bios with your current bios or with the latest beta bios available. When flashing please make sure to follow the correct steps for flashing a bios.
Step to flash bios.
1. Enter bios and load "Optimized Defaults" Press F10 to save and exit.
2. Renter bios and press F8 to enter q-flash.
3. Set "Keep DMI Pool Data" to disabled.
4. Select bios file and falsh bios.
5. After flash choose restart.
6. Enter bios and Load "Optimized Defaults" Press F10 to save and exit.
7. Enter bios leave all default except for Ram settings ie. Timings and voltages. Set sata controllers back to AHCI, raid, or IDE (depending how they were set when you installed Windows) You can turn off Gigabyte logo if you like. Press F10 to save and exit.
8. Enter bios set HDD boot order.
9. Let system boot to windows. During boot you should see updating dmi pool data.
10. Restart system and Enter bios and reaply any overclock settings if needed.Main Rig

Re: GIGABYTE Latest Beta BIOS
Thanks much. Just one question / problem. With my board the Bios is now the 2MB size and can ONLY be put in [as far as I know] using @Bios - which I did. I did then set to Optimized defaults and let it boot...then changed things back. So, unless they have updated the q-flash [let me know if they have], the only thing I think I can do is to try the ALT+F12 at startup. Question - is there any special range of time 'at startup' that this will work or should be tried? Is there ANY danger in loosing the Bios in both when attempting this, or attempting at the wrong time?
However, the latter part of your post adds something significant I did not know!...and likely explains why my Bios was replaced with the other, older one. I am overclocking successfully at 4.0 GHz, but lately have and for the next few days will be moving around many disks - I'm moving many things, making clones and other such. After this small period of havoc, the disks will be in the same semi-permanant order and either in or out. They haven't been of late. I didn't realize that the system could get unhappy with that...but thinking back it does. It often gives of message of a problem with the overclocking when I move the disks around. So, as I have to move them around a bit more, I guess it is best to do that last part [minus the q-flash] when they are in their final order and positions - yes?
Thanks again.Last edited by crazybear; 05-19-2012, 03:33 AM.Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD7 v.1 [F9d Bios] with i7-990X

Re: GIGABYTE Latest Beta BIOS
When you are flashing to or from a 2mb bios you need to use @bios. Same ruels aply just when in side @bios you need to place a check in the box to disable keep dmi pool data.
Swapping HDD's around should not hurt the bios in any way, the only thing I can think of is that if a drive is moved from the intel controller to the Jmicron controller windows might not be happy but your bios should not care.
You may want to check for stablity with your overclock. If your overclock is not stable that would corrupt your bios. Since you said you have seen the red bios in bios saying overclocked failed.
Using the ALT+F12 or Ctrl+F12 will not hurt anything. That is there so you can update your back up bios or restore your main bios to a older version or just to revocer your main bios.
You need to press these keys at start up, just like you do when you try to enter the bios. Make sure your keyboard is a wired usb keyboard, some usb keyboards have issues and some users need to use a PS/2 keyboard. It helps some users to hold the ALT or the Ctrl key as they power on the system and then spam the F12 key. You will see a warning that you are about to update the backup bios and ask you to press enter to continue.Main Rig

I'll do more stability tests on the overclocking - never hurts; but if I don't move disks around it is stable as a rock.
-----edit----- I held down the ALT and banged on the F12 like mad..it worked. Only thing is I had not checked the box when I loaded the BIOS...need I do so again with the box checked? What is that doing differently? Thanks.Last edited by crazybear; 05-19-2012, 06:00 PM.Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD7 v.1 [F9d Bios] with i7-990X

looks like we're both 1st time posters. Anyway, to answer your question...
I have the X79-UD5, BIOS F12 and i7-3820. I pulled out my multimeter and measured the VCore through the hole at the bottom of my case and found that my voltage was going to about 0.995v for a very brief moment and then jumped to 1.375 (needed for 36x125, 4.5 GHz). That period with 1V might only be a misreading since the measure interval could have been to short to get to the correct value before the next interval.
Either you are having the same measuring problem but mistaken as too low or your board does something substancially different, which is unlikely within the same series of boards. To activate the strap I had to set the CPU core mulitplier to 12x and RAM multiplier to 8x (minimal values) to make it start at BCLK100 first before applying the rest of the settings... Thanks to san0822 at xtremesystems tho for that hint. ^.^

If you did not clear dmi pool data when flashing I would suggest try to reflash using the correct steps. Since you are already on a 2MB bios file you do not need to use @bios again. You can use q-flash to flash your bios from now on unless you want to go back to the smaller bios file.Main Rig

Bios F8, F9, F10 all broke this feature with the exact same keyboard mouse.
also the manual states to use the USB ports next to the LAN port because those are the intel chipset ports but the kb/mouse do not work in bios on those ports (even with bios F7)
in fact, the only ports the kb/mouse works on are the top two ports next to the ps/2 port
summary:
f7: USB only works on top two ports next to ps/2 in bios
f8: no USB ports work in bios
f9: no USB ports work in bios
