  • EP45-DS3 + OCZ REAPER 2X2GB DC Prob

    Hey.
I have recently install my new computer, and have a problem with configuring the memory.
When I bought the computer I didn't pay for installation, because I knew I could handle this. What I didn't know was that I need to manualy set the parameters in the bios.

    My system is:
    CPU - Q9550
CPU Cooler - OCZ Vendetta 2
    MoBo - GIGABYTE EP45-DS3 (Bios V. F9)
    RAM - OCZ REAPER 2X2GB 1066MHz
    GPU - Sapphire Radeon HD4870X2
    HDD - Western Digital 320GB
TV Card - Leadtek Winfast PxDVR3200 MCE H
    PSU - ThermalTake QFan 650W

    My Bios parameters

What do I need to do?
Please write it in steps (like "1. do this first, then restart. 2. chnge this and this." ect...)

Please, if there enyone who have exaclly those RAM and MoBo or enyone who know how to fix this, tell me.

    Thanks in advance,
    Oz.<!-- / message -->

As for your ram settings. Set this and then put the sticks back in dual channel. These will be loose and for sure should boot if you have two working 100% Sticks. You can then lower settings later >>>>

Re: EP45-DS3 + OCZ REAPER 2X2GB DC Prob

      OK, let's go over it.
I power up my comp and in the bios click on load optimal default (I have not change anything in the voltages\timings, but I want to be sure everything is "neutral").
      Then:
      1) I'll change the bold lines (PCI-E, tRFC & voltages) then reboot.
      2) I'll change the MCH Frequency Latch to 400, then reboot.
      3) Change the other timings to the bigger numbers.
      4) Power off, change to Dual Channel and work sometime on windows.
      5) Lower the timings one at once, and see what is the limit I can lower them.

      Please confirm that.

      Thank you for your help!

I searched for instructions of run Memtest86+ from the USB key, but there is none. How do I run it from my disk on key?

Use the Guide posted here for making a Bootable USB key >>>

And then put this Memtest86+ file on the stick >>>

It is much easier to burn a CD, do you not have one?

Too boot from USB hit F12 at startup (When you normally hit Delete to enter the BIOS) and choose Hard drive or HDD and then a new window will appear and you select your USB Stick. USB must be plugged in the whole time you reboot and Legacy USB storage detect Must be enabled in the BIOS

Me and another member did some testing on Creating this not long ago incase you have issues >>>

              EDIT:

I deleted what I wrote here because it's irrelevant for the goal of getting my computer work withut problems in dual channel. please ignore all which I have wrote before, and let's start fresh from here.
I'm sorry, but some of the parameters were incorrect (I copied the whole thing from a post in the forum and edited it, but I missed some values).

I am deeply sorry for the mass I made. I should have checked it before I posted it.
Please repeat your guide. What should I need to do?

On the RAM stick it is written 2.2V, so this is the voltage.
I thought I will tweak today, but it will have to wait for tomorrow.
Please post your response as soon as possible, so we'll have time untill 24 hours from now, when I'll probably tweak.

              Best regards,
              Oz.

Re: EP45-DS3 + OCZ REAPER 2X2GB DC Prob

Yeah, 2.2v is the warrantied voltage. 2.1 will likely work just fine though. Spec ram voltages are printed that way so they may work in any system, not all will need the full amount.

The settings I posted above should boot for you just fine in Dual Channel, did you get to try them yet?

Did you get memtest86+ working so you can test each stick before you go any further so you are sure both are good?

I didn't try them yet because there are some settings that not equal to what I have in my bios. for example:

                  Performance Enhance...................: [Turbo]
                  Extreme Memory Profile (X.M.P.).....: [Auto]

Do I need to change them after I change the Voltages? with the timings or before?

I didn't check the sticks with memtest86+, but they seems fine alone...
Should I check them before I preform the changes? How many hours will do for each test?

Please, if you get the time, write your recommended settings with the settings I wrote the last post (I'm sorry, but I want to be sure what I'm doing because every blue, red blank screen make me freak out ).

The 1066MHz will be stable only if I overclock? If so, I don't mind to run it at slower speed now, untill I'll overclock (about six months from now).
When I'll do some overclock, I'm gonna study everything about it and about the bios. Untill that, I just want my system to be stable and fine.

Re: EP45-DS3 + OCZ REAPER 2X2GB DC Prob

Ya, they are not equal because I advised you to change them. Do first

I would test each stick separately for at least 10-12 passes before you do anything to be sure they are not DOA

My second post is my recommended settings. Dont worry you wont break anything! You will likely spend a few times in the waiting game though as you reboot/try new setting/reboot, ect

MCH latch has nothing to do with Memory speeds.

Ram speed is set in this fashion >>>

FSB (CPU Host Freq) X Memory Multiplier = Ram speed

                    So 333 x 3.20 = 1066

DDR2 is Double Data Rate so 533 Freq Is doubled to be 1066 in reality.

So you are running 1066 ram speed if you see 533 in The memory Tab (NOT SPD) of CPU-z

And yes the ram must be overclock manually to run it at it's stock speed. All DDR2-1066 ram is really DDR-800 that has been tested to perform at 1066 with said voltages and timings. So you are really not overclocking so much as setting it to what it was tested to run at

Thank you for the quick response.
                      I'll test the RAM.
After that (if everything is OK, of course) I'll set MCH+RAM Voltages, PCI Express Frequency and tRFC as you suggested, then reboot.
Then I'll set the MCH Frequency Latch to 400 and reboot.
In the end i"ll set the timings and other stuff.

                      1) Do I need to disable the Extreme Memory Profile (X.M.P.)?

See the attached! What does it means? DOA stick?

Re: EP45-DS3 + OCZ REAPER 2X2GB DC Prob

                        I figure out the problem!
After almost 3 hours, 9 loops & 626 errors, I restarted and entered the bios. Then I set the Performance Enhance to [STANDARD] (I was an idiot and leave it on turbo). Now everything is fine.
I'm gonna replace the sticks now. One is good, it is the other turn to be tested. I'll post here tomorrow if the RAM is OK, and then I'll start tweak.

                        See ya.

                        EDIT:
The second stick passed 11 loops (3:43 hours), but had 87 errors on tests 7+5 (I dont now what other tests, becuase I wasn't able to scroll).
Now I'm going to perform the test again on the first stick because I saw it passes without failing only 2 times in a row.

As you can see, the first stick have no errors.
Now I'll shut up and let you, experts, speak.

Yes, disable XMP for per stick testing and manually set main timings, ram voltage and memory multi to what matches Ram stock speed.

When you see a red warning box in the BIOS that means all settings were not applied and stock settings are loaded (Not what you are seeing for settings in the BIOS) Just means you have something incorrect and it will not boot (Often CPU Voltage if you have A overclock, or too tight of a ram setting)

DOA means Dead On Arrival or Dying On Arrival (BAD Stick of ram)

Yes, you can have a bad slot, if you have a stick you know is good (Or both) and you think you have a bad slot then test all slots one by one with each stick. If one slot always fails then you have a bad slot

So one good stick and one bad? After you set Performance Enhance to standard, did you test both sticks at the same settings in the same slot? If so, looks like one stick is indeed bad

I set Performance Enhance to standard and the rest was Auto. It was the same slot, but exept the Performance Enhance everything was Auto.
Now I'll set as you said and have a look...

                              EDIT:
It had errors as well with "Yes, disable XMP for per stick testing and manually set main timings, ram voltage and memory multi to what matches Ram stock speed." I tested the stick which didn't fail at Auto.
What I neet to do? Give my computer to the store where I bought it (they are the authorized distributor of OCZ here)? They want almost 65$ for checking and fixing it (if it isn't my fault including the transportation to their store).
What are you suggesting to do?
                              =\

                              News flash:
All of the testing were made on slot 1, channel A. I tried to boot my system from slot 3, channel A with the firs stick ("the good") without any luck. I chaned back to slot 1, and hocus-pocus, it boots.
As you remember, the second stick had errors while the first stick had none. And as I mentioned at the first post (and deleted it...) I can boot almost normally while I'm using Dual Channel at channel B.

I'm starting to think that at the beginning I put the second stick at slot 3, and:
                              1) One of them was DOA and affected the other.
                              2) I am the responsibble (static electricity).

I'm of course tending to believe that the first is the correct because I handle with RAM all the time, and in my work too. But I am not rejecting the second because it can be true either.

I think I'll go to the store and pay 65$ and give this to it's end.
If they will tell me I'm unfortunatly the responsible I gonna have to pay for new items.

Lsdmeasap, tell me please your opinion.
I thank you from the bottom of my heart for your help so far!
