• EP45-DS3R & Q9300 overclock test ...

Hi
I just recently built a new system since am moving away from notebooks and trying to save money on buying a Mac Pro. I build this computer with the hope of running OS X using the new EFI-X dongle that am still awaiting delivery.
At this time I have the system up and running and have installed XPPro on one of my drives. I have been playing with the unit for a few days now and now want to try my hands at doing a little overclocking. I found this posting below and tried some of the settings and got the system to accept some of the changes.

This is my hardware build:
Gigabyte GA-EP45-DS3R; Intel Core 2 Quad Q9300; 4GB G.Skill DDR2-1066 PC2-8500; RAIDMAX RX-530SS ATX Power Supply; EVGA e-GeGorce 7200GS; Samsung SyncMaster 2220 wm; HEC 6XR8 mid-tower case.

For some reason when I was using the computer before I did the test overclocking, system properties showed that the processor speed was 2.0GHz when infact I have a 2.5GHz cpu. But after the overclock, I got it to 2.50GHz (strange).

I would like to overclock to at least a 3.06GHz. Anyone has a similar mobo and processor and can run by the setting for me?

I also noticed that since trying that overclocking, each time I try to put the system on standby ... it doesn't stay and keeps "waking up".

Re: EP45-DS3R & Q9300 overclock test ...

You have to disable C1E and EIST to disable Intel Speedstep, this is why your CPU was less then you set it at. I see those are disabled in your pics, but maybe they were not before you realized this?

You will have to update the BIOS to get S3 (That is what sleep you meant correct) working. Please do read this before you do so >>>

Do you want suggested 3.0Ghz settings or more?

Re: EP45-DS3R & Q9300 overclock test ...

Thanks for the response. I went ahead and enable C1E and EIST, but when I choose "standby" in windows, I can hear the machine "shutdown" for a split second and it was back up again. I also have the latest BIOS revision which is F10 and have S3 choosen in the menu.
I went looking into Everest and saw this:

Re: EP45-DS3R & Q9300 overclock test ...

All DDR2 is 800Mhz, just tested to run at rated specs (speed, timings and voltages) at 1066 and those must be set by the end user. This is normal for all 1066 Ram

Please run these two command and post a image or tell me the results of each. Press windows Key + R and type cmd, then type or copy/paste the following >>>

Code:
powercfg -devicequery wake_armed
And
Code:
powercfg -a
And please also post your MIT settings you are using for me out of your BIOS >>>

Re: EP45-DS3R & Q9300 overclock test ...

Ok, as for sleep. Your image shows nothing is set to allow the system to wake up, which sounds odd as you say it keep waking up... Are you using a usb mouse? If so can you unplug it to be sure it is not waking the system?

Too bad you do not have vista installed, dual boot even would be nice for a test. I say that because vista allows the command "powercfg -lastwake" to show what woke the system up. In XP this does not work, you could look in event viewer but that could take you days to locate the correct item

Did you load optimized defaults and save and apply after you flashed to the latest BIOS, if not you must do this to properly flash. And this may be why you fail to resume from S3 sleep as your settings look ok to me. You may want to manually set Static tRead to 8 or 9, and add a bit more MCH voltage though to be sure. And I am not positive but that ram may not run 1066 speeds so stable at 2.0V either

Re: EP45-DS3R & Q9300 overclock test ...

OK...now this is really strange. I disconnected all the USB devices I had to the computer (iPhone, camera, mouse) and tried both standby and hibernate and none kept the system in sleep or standby mode. It keeps waking up again. I am also using an Apple USB keyboard but don't think it's causing those issues.

If I can recall clearly, I flashed the BIOS using the USB method and I hadn't installed windows on the pc yet. I remember using the "load fail-safe defaults" and "load optimized defaults" when I first tried overclocking and at one point, the system was giving me those loud beeps, which scared the hell out of me and I quickly went back in and load those default settings.
FYI: I have never than overclocking before, and this was my first at it.

Can you give me a stable speed voltage so as to get the RAM to run at 1066.
I would also like to try to overclock the processor to 3.0GHz. But maybe that can wait until I get those sleep issues resolved.

I do have the Static tRead set to 8. Should I increase it to 9?

I had forgotten to show u this. Under "Memory timings", I notice that the numbers are different. Is that command? or maybe something is not set right in the BIOS.

Re: EP45-DS3R & Q9300 overclock test ...

Those are just the programmed settings for your ram in it's SPD Chip, you would need to look in Chipset or Overclock to see the actual ram speed and timings being used

Sleep issues shouold likely be solved last, as many voltages do need to be set correctly anf fully tested to be stable before sleep will work

Try this for 3GHz >>>

Re: EP45-DS3R & Q9300 overclock test ...

I just tried those settings, but the cpu speed did not change. I am still at 2500.0MHz. Confirm by everest and CPU-Z.
After I applied the settings and saved, the system restarted, then immediately shutdown, restarted again and shutdown, then restarted took me to the BIOS with this RED window stating:
" the system has experience boot failures because of overclocking changes of voltages. Last settings in this page may not coincide with current H/W states. "

any ideas?

Yeah that means you did not have correct settings. Likely CPU Voltage, what did you set? Try more

As for your CPU running at 2.5 you need to go into advanced BIOS page and disable the following >>>

Advanced Settings
Limit CPUID Max. to 3.....................: [Disabled]
No-Execute Memory Protect............: [Enabled]

All those settings are set correctly, well except for 4 and 5. don't see C2/C2E State Support nor x C4/C4E State Support.

the CPU Vcore is set at [1.21250V]
should I try higher or lower?

I have all those the same as you listed, except for items 4 and 5, C2/C2E State Support and x C4/C4E State Support. Those I don't see in the list of features.

My cpu vcore is set to 1.35000v.

should I got higher or lower?

sorry for the double post ... I have tried those two voltages, system those the same thing.

Have you ever loaded optimized defaults with that CPU installed yet? If not you MUST

Hey, sorry about that speedstep comment, your CPU is supposed to be 2.5ghz. Since you are seeing the red box when you go into the BIOS that means your setting changes are not being applied so you either have something to tight or not enough voltage to something so the 402 FSB change is not being made (But it may still be shown in the BIOS so it looks like it is, when it is not)

What does CPU-z show you for voltage being used now? You may need to set it higher, but likely not. I just wonder how much a drop you have from BIOS to windows

When I do Optimized defaults (which I did twice), I end up loosing all the custom settings you gave me. I now have to again apply those specific settings, which I will do in the morning. It's 2am here in NY and am tired.
Will post when I get it done again.

OK, Just wanted to be sure you have loaded it at least once since your install or BIOS flash.

Just so you know, you can use F11 on the MAIN page of the BIOS to save, and F12 for load. I only wanted you to load that because you mentioned C2 support not being shown, but it may just not be a feature in your CPU is all
