  • GA-EP45-DS3L crashing on resume from sleep

    and hibernation (!!!)

    System spec:

    Core 2 Duo 3.33Ghz 45nm
    2x 4GB (2x2GB) Corsair TwinX DDR2 XMS2 PC8500
    ATI Radeon 4870X2 (8.9)
    Zalman ZM1000-HP PSU
    Asus Xonar DX (6.12.8.1738)
    GA-EP45-DS3L (f9)
    Western Digital Black Caviar 1TB
    Pioneer DVD-RW DVR-216D (1.06)
On-board components - Drivers current as of 18th October.
    Windows Vista Ultimate 64-bit w/ SP1

Prior to F9 my PC wouldn't resume from sleep, the fans would roar, go dead, then repeat over and over. With F9 applied I put the machine to sleep and brought it back to life. Success! I went to bed a happy man.

Unfortunately I found out that if the computer was left to sleep for a while it would blue screen seconds after resuming. The first couple were encouraging, a failure in the realtek driver and one in the USB, and it just so happened that new realtek and chipset drivers came out on te 15th October, so I applied them.

No luck, now it's BSOD for things I can't trace, and as they simply represent the last thing on the stack prior to crash this doesn't mean they're the cause either, they're just the most likely candidate.

I reset the BIOS to optimised defaults and changed three settings:

    1. I enabled AHCI mode (it was on when Windows was installed)
    2. I enabled native mode for AHCI.
    3. I set HPET to 64-bit as I use Windows Vista 64-bit

Tested with this and the problem continued.

I went back to my customised settings:

    1. All drives set to None (AHCI handles this)
    2. All memory, VGA and CPU settings to auto, CIA to none. Reduced memory performance to Standard.
    3. Hard drive first boot device
    4. AHCI on with native mode.
    5. Full legacy USB support
    6. Allow mouse and keyboard to wake machine
    7. Disabled Auzilla codec
    8. Enabled green LAN
    9. Enabled those additional levels of CPU power saving. Something level 2 and level 4?

Nope, crashes. CPU-Z (attached) shows the memory using the EPP profile though and the timings are in line with that profile 1066 5-5-5-15 2T.

Now I try optimised defaults but manually set the RAM timings to 1066 5-5-5-15 v2.1

    Same problem

My latest test was to use hibernation, but upon resuming Windows crashed, reporting errors in hyberfil.sys.

I've run chkdsk /b and sfc /scannow, no problems.

I've run Windows Memory Diagnostics on all memory performance Standard through Extreme, extended test using at least eight passes every time. No problems.

memtest+ 1.7 reported a problem, but it was released before support for this board's chipset, so I don't know if that is reliable. I haven't been able to get memtest + 2.01 to boot, it hangs on Loading...

prime95 always stops one thread with a rounding error, but I haven't used it with all the above BIOS tests. I've been meaning to try a blend test with performance standard for the memory. CPU never goes above 60 Celsius, even when run for 18 hours.

I ran the quick check from WD Diagnostics on the hard drive, no problems. Haven't tried the thorough takes forever test yet.

No problems with the machine outside sleep crashes, apart from a crash I had during logon today, there was a sound stutter and then it blue screened. It was loading some app and I was UACing another app.

I don't run DES, the damn thing always crashed, nor is EasyTune on the machine because it always wanted to run (something) at startup, no matter what I told it.

Advice? Likely cause? I miss sleep so much.

Please post me your settings >>>>

As for Easytune, if you do not want it to run at startup you can use windows defender, tools, software explorer to disable it. Or you can use this simple startup manager (It will be in control panel, 32bit items after you install it) >>>

Re: GA-EP45-DS3L crashing on resume from sleep

Terribly sorry for taking so long to come back to you, I've been on holiday. I finally ran a full disk check, but it came up clean. I've also found that the machine can blue screen when starting up from a shutdown, yet I don't have a single issue after boot and both chkdsk c: /b and sfc /scannnow tell me there aren't any problems.

        Really hoping you can help.

Re: GA-EP45-DS3L crashing on resume from sleep

Does the XMP profile setting have any effect if you manually set everything, or does it simply determine the automatic values?

Thanks for the detailed response, I guess I'll try everything together, if that fixes it turn them off one at a time and see what's required to work.

Re: GA-EP45-DS3L crashing on resume from sleep

XMP is for if you want to use Auto, and your memory must be XMP programmed/compatible for it to work/be enabled.

If you do use it, you would need to leave everything else on Auto

See if these changes help any. I do see you need to set your ram voltage for sure, that alone may fix it as your ram timings are very loose already >>>>

Re: GA-EP45-DS3L crashing on resume from sleep

I'll try those when I get back. Should I use them with everything else set to auto or as they were at the end of the last test?

The RAM uses 1.8v for JDEC settings and 2.1 for EPP (the XMP profile settings). The values above are in-line with the fastest JDEC profile, though I realise now that the driving strength is 1066 above but to be correctly in line with that profile would need to be 800. So yes, I might need to change the voltage.

I've found that when I set the MCH Voltage as high as 1.35 that I receive a warning on the MIT screen that the machine failed to boot due to voltage/overclocking changes and that the values on the screen may not represent the true values. From testing I think this is the MCH Voltage.

Some reading on the Corsair forums found me a recommendation to increase North Bridge voltage by 0.05 in situations where four DIMMs were in use. The next step up in MCH Voltage from the default of 1.1 is 1.16, so I tried that with everything else on auto, however upon attempting to resume from sleep this morning the PC simply span the fans up and down ad-nauseam without ever waking.

Re: GA-EP45-DS3L crashing on resume from sleep

Use them with what you gave me last time. I just meant for those to be trial changes to what you had given me

Ya, use 2.1 for your ram voltage for now, you may be able to use 2.0 later... Maybe

Your ram is rated for 1066 and you are running it at that so you should use 1066 or above driving strength profile

1.35 maybe a bit much. You do have 8GB right? Try 1.26-1.32 and see how that does. You really cannot be sure 1.25 is the exact cause of that Warning unless that was the ONLY value you changed at that time. Any incorrect setting that will not allow the board to boot will revert the BIOS to stock (Although you will see all your settings still) and the warning will be shown. Default BIOS settings will be applied until you change things to be correct

Ya, the more ram you have the more you need to add to MCH. 1.16 will likely not be enough, I find 1.2-1.24/6 is needed just for 4GB at 900Mhz, so you will likely need more. And as you found out, too much will also not work, you just have to find the "Sweet Spot"

Good luck, and let me know how you are getting along

Re: GA-EP45-DS3L crashing on resume from sleep

Haven't had a chance to try your settings yet, but I did run a quick test I thought you might be interested in.

If I change the MCH Core to 1.050 (where I believe 1.100 is the default) then the PC resumes from sleep successfully every time (for 45 minute stretches and left overnight). Problem solved, hurrah? Alas no, because upon resuming from sleep I find that in 3D intensive games I have flickering textures until I reboot, at which point the problem goes away. If I were to abandon sleep and only use shutdown this might be acceptable, but the problem might simply occur over extended periods, and I don't want to live without sleep.

I'll try and give your settings a try tonight. I'm on holiday from Thursday so if I suddenly go quiet that's why, not because I don't great appreciate your assistance with this most irksome issue :)

Re: GA-EP45-DS3L crashing on resume from sleep

After further investigation it looks like the flickering textures on resume are an AMD driver problem, I find that disabling the Catalyst AI in the Catalyst Control Panel stops the flickering so I am reporting the problem to them.

Looks like I'm all set. I'm going to play with the MCH Core voltage to see how far from 1.1 I need to deviate for the machine to still resume after a long sleep, but other than that it seems my problems are solved. Many thanks for all your help!

Nice to see you found something that works. I was about to say that may be a driver issue only, seems you found that out though.

New drivers come out often so just keep checking in for a new one to try. You could also try older ones as often those work better as well. >>>
