  • EP45-DS3L OC woes

    Hi,
    I'm working on a budget to mid-range PC buyers guide and I'm currently testing the EP45-DS3L to see if it's worth a recommendation.
    I'm having trouble though getting any significant overclock out of an E7200. I've had good experiences with the P35 Ds3, P35 DQ6 and X38 DQ6 so I'm not new to GB and OC in general, but I can't figure out the problem here.

    Here's my hardware:
    EP45 DS3L (BIOS F8 Final)
    Corsair HX520 PSU
    OCZ 2x2GB 1066 or Cellshock 2x1GB 1000 CL4 (runs at relaxed timings)
    ATI 3870
    Sunbeam Core Contact Freezer (CPU temp is definitely not a problem)

    At standard voltages 275 FSB is no problem but 300 won't POST even with significantly increased voltages. I tried different RAM slots and the two different RAM kits but the problem seems not to be RAM related (RAM Multi is set poperly, see below)

    I filled out the BIOS template with the changes I made:

    I can't figure out what the problem is. I have not tried the a different CPU yet or tried this CPU on a different board, but I can't really believe that the CPU is unable to reach 300 FSB.

    I have successfully overclocked that board and CPU to 3.4Ghz without any problem. I'm using 800mhz memory though. You can see my basic settings at 3.2Ghz here:

    where LSD proposed some memory tweaks. There are others with 1066 memory who have posted to the forum also. Should be very doable.

      Yeah you should for sure be able to reach 300 FSB at least! Hmm Did you ever try a jump right to 333 or 350-400?

      Here is what I suggest for 300FSB from what you have above. Another thing to also check and be sure about it does the BIOS you are using support your CPU?

But I am not sure I have not seem many users post about these CPU's. you may need to set higher then 1.3-1.35 to overcome vdroop then bring it down later. But I would think you should not need that much at all for only 2.8GHz.

      Maybe your Static tRead is set to low and this is the cause of your issues, please check with memset and let me know

        Thanks for the replies guys.
        I forgot to mention that I already tried increasing tRD but it didn't change anything. I tried again (setting it to 10 on both channels) but still no POST.

        I'll try a different CPU today, maybe the board just doesn't like the E7200s.

          The above settings failed for you? Did you enter them ALL to the highest I suggested?

          If so, have you ever flashed the BIOS, or loaded optimized defaults and then started trying over again?

            I went even a little higher, based on experieneces witht the P35 Boards

            At 5-5-5-18 and tRD 10 on both channels. At stock speed the tRD for channel B is 6 while that for Channel A is 5, maybe I ought to try setting A 1 lower than B. Performance level is weird sometimes, I remember that I needed to turn it up on the P35 DQ6 when I went from DDR2 1000 4-4-4-12 to 5-5-5-18
            I'll also try your exact timings and another CPU now, didn't get aroudn to doing that yesterday.

            Also, do you know where I can finde beta BIOSes for the P45 DS3L? I know a German site that has them for the higher end boards (jzelectronic.de, great support for Gigabyte boards from them) but they don't have any DS3L beta BIOSes since they don't carry the board.

            EDIT:
            It is the the CPU, the board doesn't like it for some reason. I just set an E8500 to 400x9,5 and only adjusted the Vcore and vMCH and left everything else at standard settings. Boots fine and it's running prime now.
            Seems like Gigabyte still has some work to do on the BIOS, that CPU shoudl do 4+GHz and not fail to do 2,8GHz (will test it on another board, but I've never heard of a CPU that had such a low FSB wall).

              Well, it may not have liked your particular piece of silicon, but that board has no problems with the E7200, as a rule. I, and several others on this forum, are using that combination. I'm at 400mhz FSB with any multiplier (runs as high as 3.4G, no problems).

                I probably should have said that the BIOS I'm using doesn't like the E7200, have you tried overclocking with the F8?

                And I see that you use the F9b BIOS, where can I get that one?

                  YA, I was going to say the timings you posted were VERY Loose and should have ran fine. Sounds like what mxcrowe said either your board did not like your chip, or your CPU itself was a bunk one? That or like you said, they just need to work more on the BIOS, which is very well possible as the budget range of CPU's may not have been tested as much as the mainstream ones by Gigabyte

                    Yes, I have successfully run memory and cpu OC settings on F7-F9b. Once the F9b BIOS did not resolve my "resume from S3" issues, which is why Giga sent it to me, I flashed back to F8 rather than operate on a beta version of the BIOS.
                    Hey, L, are you calling my CPU "budget range"?? Perhaps that's a compliment?

                      Yeah, 3MB cache, slower initial speeds and cheaper price makie the E7200 budget range CPU

                        Well, I'll take the cheaper price every day...nice feature when you can find it. Initial speed, I don't care as long as it will clock up, which is certainly does. 3MB cache vs. 4MB, not sure how much of a real-world difference one would ever see with that. So in the end, cheaper is better!
                        Anyway, I decided "budget range" is a compliment...

                          It is 3MB Vs 6MB cache between the budget and mainstream 45nm Dual cores
