    motherboards look wierd to me.

    I've always used Intel motherboards in the past. They were just plain printed circuit boards with the I/O port riser on the back. Some of these ASRock boards, and I presume other brands as well, have plastic or metal things on the board. The biggest I've seen are over and on the sides of the I/O ports. There are also plastic or metal coverings on the lower right of the boards, or maybe they are painted on decorations over bare parts of the motherboard.

    What are they? Do they serve any purpose? Do they get in the way? Can they be discarded?
