  • Max RAM Question - J3160-ITX

    Had a question about the memory support list for this specific motherboard (but this question could really be applied to all of the ASRock boards). For the motherboard in question the link to the supported memory list is here. I am interested in running the board with 16GB of RAM. Based on the information on the link I provided has the board been tested with two sticks of 8GB RAM @ DDR3 1600? I just wanted to make sure that I am reading the chart correctly because I've bumped into issues in the past (albeit with non-ASRock boards) where running max RAM on the specification meant utilizing slower sticks (e.g DDR3 1333 or 1066).

    Sorry if this seems a bit dense I just need some additional validation as this is my first ASRock board and I really hate buying the wrong components and having to return them.

    Gday most of these J ITX motherboards use DDR3 L (Low voltage) ram
    which is different from Laptop RAM and different from Desktop DDR3 ram

    The way I would find the answer is:-
    google - asrock J3160-ITX

    Very first match - ASRock > J3160-ITX
    As you can see:-

    - Dual Channel DDR3/DDR3L Memory Technology
    - 2 x DDR3/DDR3L SO-DIMM Slots*
    - Supports DDR3/DDR3L 1600/1066 non-ECC, un-buffered memory
    - Max. capacity of system memory: 16GB*

    If you haven't bought it yet. I would recommend buying this instead:-

      I found the same information you linked prior to making this thread. I found them to be a bit confusing which is why I made a forum post. For example when it lists "DDR3/DDR3L 1600/1066" does this mean it can utilize DDR3 1.5v DIMMS @ 1600 and DDR3L 1.3V DIMMS @ 1066 only or can either voltage variant run at either speed?

      As for the board you linked, that is basically what I am building but the power consumption is way too high for my application. I need something in the <10w range which is why I'm looking at Atoms and Celerons.

        The following information is from the ASRock website:

        - Dual Channel DDR3/DDR3L Memory Technology
        - 2 x DDR3/DDR3L SO-DIMM Slots*
        - Supports DDR3/DDR3L 1600/1066 non-ECC, un-buffered memory
        - Max. capacity of system memory: 16GB*

        *If only one SO-DIMM module is installed, please install it into DDR3_A1.

        Supports Standard & Low Voltage SO-DIMMs
        Capable of supporting both standard and low-voltage SO-DIMMs.

        16GB Memory Support
        Each slot supports 8GB memory modules, thus delivering a maximum capacity up to 16GB.

        Note: Each RAM whose frequency is 1333 will downgrade to DDR3 1066.

        Supported Memory:
        DDR3 1600 8GB Kingston KVR16LS11/8 DS 2pcs
        From Kingston Memory Search the price is for one 8GB memory module.


        If your cpu supports 1600MHz memory speeds, you should be fine.
        If you buy memory rated at 1333MHz, your system will lower the memory speed to 1066MHz.
