ID:	756349I have 2 ssd's in my system. and decided to run hd pro on them and am very disappointed with the speed. One the 840 evo 250Gb its only reading average 305mbs 335mbs was the top speed. My os is on that and i did upgrade the firmware. The other is an m4-256GB.
Its max read was 293mbs and average 276mbs. I used hd tune pro 5.50. Bios are set yo ahci so what could be the problem. My specs are below. I posted here since its an asrock extream 6 board.

    Re: slow ssd's

Check your motherboard user manual to make sure that each of the ssd's data cables are connected to the Intel sata3 ports.

The ASMedia sata3 port performance is inferior to the Intel sata3 ports for ssd's.

          Re: slow ssd's

A much better ssd benchmark is Anvil's Storage Utilities Download Version 1.1 2014

The 4K small file performance is much more important than the large sequential read/write results.

Include an AS_SSD benchmark for each ssd so that we can see if the partition alignment is properly set on a 4K boundary.

The benchmark results below are with my P35 system using the native Intel sata2 ports.

Reread post #2 to make sure that your ssd''s are connected to the Intel sata3 ports!!

Without the proper 840 Evo firmware update, its performance is degraded in some circumstances.

              Re: slow ssd's

As Prof Jim said, the ASMedia SATA ports that are supposed to be SATA III, really are not fully SATA III. Your sequential read speed of ~300MB/s clearly shows that you have the EVO connected to an ASMedia SATA port.

The ASMedia SATA chipset is only able to be connected to one PCIe 2.0 lane at 5Gb/s, not the full 6Gb/s of SATA III. SSD enthusiasts know that the ASMedia and most of the Marvell add on "SATA III" chipsets do not perform as well as the Intel SATA III chipsets.

The four SATA ports at the top of the stack of ten SATA ports on your board are connected to the two ASMedia SATA chipsets on this board. All you need to do is move the SATA data cable of your EVO to one of the six Intel SATA III ports below the four ASMedia SATA ports. Check the manual to find the Intel SATA ports.

Well you where right that i didn.t have it connected to the Intel chipset. So ive put it in the one asrock suggest for boot drive. Down loaded Anvil's benchmark.

Well ProfJim use 840 Pro on Sata2 port, you use 840 EVO on Sata3 port. Big differences are expected.

                      Re: slow ssd's

That is certainly NOT the difference between SATA II and SATA III! No SATA III SSD in existence can do over 8GB/s read speed, except...

... when a Samsung EVO has RAPID mode enabled in the Samsung Magician software. What we are really seeing is the RAM caching that RAPID creates, which is similar to a RAM drive created by software out of the PC RAM memory.

So all the read speed results are strictly those of the PC's RAM memory, which certainly can do 8GB/s read speed. For some reason, Anvil is not affected as much by the Samsung RAM cache in the write tests than it is in the read tests. We can see some affect of RAPID in the write tests, but not as much as in the read tests.

Prof Jim's Anvil test was done without RAPID enabled, so we see the true results of his SSD connected to a SATA II interface. The OP's Anvil test with RAPID enabled, is 95% that of his PC's RAM memory, and in no way indicates the actual performance of an EVO.

I'm not saying the Samsung EVO is a bad SSD, in a couple performance aspects without RAPID, it is the best of any current SSD. But once RAPID mode is enabled, we are no longer comparing SSDs, we are comparing a RAM drive to SSDs, which are two very different things.

                          Re: slow ssd's

Yes, that is the true performance of your 840 EVO, which is great.

A few other things that can affect SSD benchmark and real world performance are the use of CPU power saving options, like SpeedStep and C States.

If you have the IRST driver package installed on a Z87 or Z97 board, there is a new feature from Intel called Dynamic Storage Accelerator. There is an option in the BIOS, Storage Configuration screen, to enable this option. You then can configure DSA in the IRST Windows UI, which is by default set to the performance setting.

RAPID can be useful, if you understand how it works. The first time you open/read a file from the EVO, it is read from the SSD of course, and also put into the RAM cache. If you open that same file again without the PC having been rebooted, it will be read super fast from the RAM cache.
