Pardon the noob question but I have not been able to havegoogle answer for me. I am using theSamsung XP941 (PCIe SSD) as my boot drive on the ASRock X99 Professionalmotherboard. The OS is Windows 7 Pro andbooting into the OS seems to be working okay. I want to add a couple SATA WD Red drives for storage but I want them inRAID 1. I figured the best approach wasto reinstall Windows 7. I tried toreinstall windows 7 using the "F6 method." However during the Windows install theprocess would not recognize the Intel RAID drivers. Similarly I could not get the Intel RapidStorage Technology to work. It respondedwith a hardware error when I tried to install the latest IRST. I did change the bios SATA controller mode toRAID before trying the above. What am Imissing or am I limited to have these drives only in ACPI? Would a RAID controller card permit to dowhat I want? Many thanks.

Re: Samsung XP941 boot drive and setting up SATA RAID
I assume, as I think you said, you had the SATA mode set to RAID before you began installing Windows 7, correct?
When you tried the F6 driver installation, the Win 7 installation could not find the driver? Was the USB flash drive connected to a USB 2.0 port? The USB 3.0 ports may not be active before an OS is installed. Did you continue with the Win 7 installation at that point? Did it finish Ok?
What was the source of the F6 driver file you used? I noticed that ASRock combined the 32 bit and 64 bit F6 driver folders into one folder in their download file. I've never seen that done before, and I'm not sure how the Windows installer would react to the drivers packaged like that. Normally Intel does not combine the 32 bit and 64 bit F6 files into one package, and I always use only the 64 bit driver folder during a Windows installation.
Your second problem may be caused by the need to install .NET framework 4.5 software, before the IRST software is installed. That is noted on the Win 7 driver download page for your board:
ASRock > Fatal1ty X99 Professional
You should be fine using the standard Intel RAID mode with the XP941. AHCI is a subset of RAID so while the XP941 has some unique requirements, it should work fine with the Intel drivers. Win 7 has a built in Intel "F6" driver, but it is an older version than the 13.1 version you tried to use. That Intel RAID driver may have been enough to get Win 7 installed, but the .NET framework software is needed for the full IRST software package.

Re: Samsung XP941 boot drive and setting up SATA RAID
Hi Parsec,
Yes, SATA was set to RAID in the bios. I actually aborted the re-installation of Windows 7 when the RAID drivers were not recognized. At this point of the installation Windows shows only the drivers that it deems compatible. When I unchecked show only compatible drivers I saw the complete list of RAID driver files (located in my USB flash drive). I actually used the set downloaded (64 bit) from the Intel website. Anyway after backing out of this re-install at this point of asking for drivers, my original Windows 7 install loaded normally. After which I tried to install IRST to see what would happen. That is when I saw the error hardware not compatible. I do have .NET 4.5 installed. Also the SATA drives have not been as of yet installed. Waiting for them from newegg. Would this make a difference?

Re: Samsung XP941 boot drive and setting up SATA RAID
No, the drives not being installed makes no difference installing the RAID driver. I install the IRST software with one SSD (OS drive) connected to the board, been doing that for years, always use RAID mode, always works fine.
But since this is a new Windows installation, did you run the chipset/INF installation program, the INF driver ver:10.0.20_PV in the Win 7 download list for your board? That is the first thing you must install before anything else, as it identifies the hardware on your board. If you didn't do this before running the IRST installation program, that might explain why the IRST installation failed.
It does not make sense IMO that you're having the RAID driver installation problem during the Win 7 installation, I can't imagine this is a compatibility problem with the X99 chipset.
Intel no longer provides IRST 13.1 in its IRST software download list, you might try the 13.2 driver that is the latest version. Or did you already do that?
The only other thing is something related to the XP941, I know they take some effort to install an OS on, meaning some UEFI configuration. Did you set anything for the XP941?
I haven't seen any other posts about IRST driver incompatibility with X99 boards, so I wonder if you're making a mistake somewhere. The incompatible driver problem makes no sense.
Did you restart the PC after installing .NET 4.5, and really any software installation with Win 7. That is usually required.

Re: Samsung XP941 boot drive and setting up SATA RAID
Yes Parsec. I have both .NET 4.5.1 and the INF driver file installed. The former I uninstalled and reinstalled. Also using the latest IRST version downloaded from the intel website. Below is a portion of the log file that is generated when I try to install IRST. The IRST installation ends with "platform not supported"

Re: Samsung XP941 boot drive and setting up SATA RAID
Brilliant idea posting the IRST installation log!!
I need more time to analyze what happened during the IRST installation, but two things jump out at me looking at your log:
2014:12:30 08:41:46:293: E Win32 exception occurred!!
2014:12:30 08:41:46:293: Extended error text: 'Error in device matching'
Seems to be complaining about Windows 32 bit, are you using that version? Kinda doubt that.
The device matching error looks like the installation program cannot identify your X99 chipset. Why of course is the question.
I can tell you that only IRST version 13.1 (or later) support the X99 chipset. Which should mean the installation of the F6 RAID driver is required, the Win 7 native RAID driver won't work.
The incompatible driver issue you had during installation could be several things, but only looking over your shoulder during the installation could help explain that.
I'm wondering about something related to the XP941 and the Intel SATA controller, but not sure about it yet. Interesting stuff, learning a few things here... sorry to benefit from your pain.
Checking a few things, more later.

Re: Samsung XP941 boot drive and setting up SATA RAID
Hi Parsec, thanks for staying on top of this. Subsequent to your last post I received andinstalled two of my three HD (2 TB Red WD). Lo and behold on booting the system I saw for the first time the CTRL -I command. I proceeded to configure themas RAID 1. When in Windows moresurprising was that the installation of the IRST software now went without ahitch. I initialized the drives and nowhave a spanking new "E" drive. I submit the output from thesuccessful installation of the IRST below. Was it simply that I needed to have drives installed? Hopefully you will see something useful in it. I'm waiting for my 2.5 inch SSD adapter to install the third HDdrive(Samsung 840). Keeping my fingerscrossed on this on.

Re: Samsung XP941 boot drive and setting up SATA RAID
I know I said not having your HDDs installed did not make a difference about the RAID driver not installing, and it usually doesn't, but the reason for that happening in your case is because you are using the XP941 PCIe SSD. It makes sense to me now. Nice work, glad you ignored my comment about connecting the drives not making any difference...
The XP941 and some other PCIe SSDs (yet to come) don't use the SATA controller in the X99 or other Intel chipset. I suspect that if you check Device Manager, you will find an entry for the XP941 in ATA/IDE devices or possibly Storage Controllers, besides the usual entry in Disk Drives.
But the main point is there were no drives connected to the Intel SATA controller, which is a unique situation for me. I've never tried to install the IRST driver with nothing connected to the Intel SATA controller, so had no idea it would act as if the device did not exist, as seems to be what you experienced.
One thing I notice right away in the successful IRST log output is this line, which was NOT in the first log you posted:
Device: PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_9C02&CC_0106 (Intel(R) 8 Series/C220 Chipset Family SATA AHCI Controller)
C220 is the other name for the X99 chipset, and in this case is the SATA controller device portion of the X99. Since you are using RAID mode, you will find an entry in Device Manager under Storage Controllers for the Intel SATA controller. I doubt that this device existed before it had any drives connected to it, or had a Device Manager entry.
The add on SATA chips like ASMedia and Marvell will have entries in Device Manager, and their drivers will install without any drives being connected to them. That is what I'm used to, and also have always had at least one drive connected to the Intel SATA controller. An interesting contrast.
Your Samsung 840 SSD will install fine on that PC, nothing more to worry about with the Intel SATA controller, as long as you have a drive connected to it! I wonder is this is simply an X99 chipset thing... I really don't know. Do you know that RAID will only work on the first six out of ten SATA ports on all X99 boards? Watch out for that.
This is also another example of why Samsung has not marketed the XP941 as a standard retail product, and it really isn't. It is unique in many ways, and is not a typical plug and play device, as demonstrated by the behavior of your system.
I'd love to see what Device Manager entries you have for the XP941, since PC review sites never show the details like this, and just hint about doing certain mysterious things to get an XP941 working. Plus I've never had one to play with!

Hi Parsec,
Thanks for your comments and help along the way. Hopefully nothing but blue skies ahead! For you information I've attached my device manger details (pardon the image to text conversion errors).Attached Files

Re: Samsung XP941 boot drive and setting up SATA RAID
Thanks for the Device Manager information!
A few questions for you so I can understand it better. The X99 chipset has an unusual SATA configuration, 10 SATA 6Gb/s ports total, but only six of them support RAID. Plus you use the XP941, which is not a standard SATA device. Some PCIe SSDs operate as SATA devices and others don't, depends on the SSD controller they use.
You were just using the XP941 and two HDDs in RAID 1 when you created the Device Manager (DM) info file, correct? Plus a DVD drive, but that is a different type of device.
I really just wanted to see how the XP941 appeared in DM, and the same for the X99 SATA controller(s), yes there is more than one.
One entry for the RAID support, that's the Intel(R) Desktop/Workstation/Server Express Chipset SATA RAID Controller entry in Storage Controllers.
Another entry for the four Intel SATA ports that operate in AHCI mode, the lntel(R) C610 series/X99 chipset SATA AHCI Controller1- 8062 entry in IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers.
Finally the XP941 has its own controller entry, the Standard AHCI l.O Serial ATA Controller entry also in IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers. PCIe SSDs that are not regular SATA devices actually use an AHCI driver from the OS, for Windows 7 that is msahci. So they should have a DM entry, or I expected the XP941 to have one, and it does.
We also see an entry for the XP941 in Disk Drives which is normal. We don't see other entries for your HDDs, since they are designed to use a separate storage controller, in this case the Intel SATA RAID controller. Your 840 SSD can be used with either Intel SATA controller, and will have one DM entry in Disk drives.
So all looks good and as it should be. Thanks again for posting that file!
