  • usb ports inop ASRock Z77 Extreme4

    ASRock Z77 Extreme 4, 1155
    i5 3750k, 3.4GHz
    GSkill 16GB 1866 RAM
    SSD Crucial 512GB
    Win 7 Pro 64 bit
    ZALMAN 9700 cpu cooler

USB on board inoperable. I have usb ports in front of case that are plugged into pins on the board. These are the only usb ports working.
The onboard usb does not work. There are 6 ports supporting 2.0 and 3.0.

Bios shows all usb ports supporting 2.0, 3.0etc.

Mouse, keyboards and external drives are not getting powered up when connected to board usb ports.

Next step is to remove case usb from board to see if this is causing issue. Otherwise Im kinda baffled that the board usb is not functioning.

    Any ideas would be grateful.

Re: usb ports inop ASRock Z77 Extreme4

Strange problem, all the USB 2.0 ports are provided by the Intel Z77 chipset, on the board's IO panel and the connectors for USB 2.0 ports on a PC case. The same is true for all the USB 3.0 ports, except two on the IO panel from the ASMedia ASM1042 chip.

Is this a new PC you just built, or is this a problem that happened after using the board for a while?

Did you check the USB controllers entry in Device Manager for any problems?

Did you change any options of the USB settings in the BIOS?

The IO panel cover that snaps into the PC case has several metal grounding tabs that contact the IO panel connectors. It is easy to get one or more of those tabs pushed into one of the board's connectors when mounting the board in the case. You might have a short circuit caused by one of the tabs stuck in a USB port.

Otherwise, the USB 2.0 ports on the IO panel should work fine with a new board without an OS installed, so you might have a bad board.
