  • Can't Get my GSkill Trident X @2400 on AsRock Z77 Extreme 4

Hi everyone, i bought this ram in hope to get the best 8gb ram out there
    Newegg.com - G.SKILL Trident X Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 2400 (PC3 19200) Desktop Memory Model F3-2400C10D-8GTX

When i saw the Ram it said compactible with Z77 MOBO's, so i went with the Z77 Extreme 4.
Then at the first Feedback on NewEgg at this pair of Ram, someone with the same Mobo couln't get the ram to work @2400, he got stuck @ 2200
AsRock answered on newegg saying an Update is on the works for the MoBo supporting this pair of memory.

Well, I'm pretty desesparate.. Should I sell this MOBO and buy the Z77 Extreme 6? Is the Bios update really coming?? I'm stuck at 2000, not even the 2200 the other guy was having.

Also, i wonder if it has something to be that i'm currently using a 4pin connector for CPU, instead of the 8pin new standard. Maybe that extra voltage comes from that cable?

I hope the Bios Update comes soon. If it is coming
    Thanks in advance

I have the same ram on the z77 fatality pro. To get the 2400 means i have had to bump the ddr voltage to 1.7 to run it stable @ them speeds.

Re: Can't Get my GSkill Trident X @2400 on AsRock Z77 Extreme 4

First of all, the only thing you can trust regarding which memory is compatible is the ASR Memory Support List. A memory manufacture stating a product in compatible with a certain chipset like Z77 is just to general. Current mother boards are very picky about the memory they will work with, and your Trident X is not listed in the ASR Memory Support List, in the 2400 speed section. Actually, there is no listing at all for any G.SKILL GTX model memory, so you are lucky that it works at all. ASRock boards are more forgiving about mismatched memory than others, so you got lucky there. BTW, your memory is not listed on the ASR Z77 EX 6 Memory Support List either, so that won't help at all.

Frankly, I don't understand why you are so worried about the speed of your memory. The difference in the performance of your PC with the memory running at 2000 or 2400 will at best be very, very small, and most likely will be zero, no difference. The difference in performance between memory at 1600 and 2400 is also tiny, or zero. You can find comparison tests on many PC hardware review sites that show this. What applications or work are you doing that needs memory of this speed? You can see small difference in benchmark tests, but in real world use, memory speeds above 1600 have little to no advantage.

So your power supply does not have a proper eight pin connection for the mother board, but you are more concerned with the memory running at 2000 rather than 2400? Memory uses very little power, less than two watts per DIMM. Not using an eight pin connector to the mother board could affect it and the CPU, which has the memory controller in it.

Memory in modern PCs is not a bottleneck or limiting factor compared to other things. Either get the correct memory for your mobo, or leave it at 2000 since it will make no difference.

Re: Can't Get my GSkill Trident X @2400 on AsRock Z77 Extreme 4

Well i saw some reviews on Newegg that said i had to have a i7 3770k for the ram to work on 2400, and that is bs, in the advertaisment said compactible with all z77 boards. I really don't need 2400 speeds, i run everything fine now, its just that i spend like $30 more just for the 2400. next time i will be more carefull and wait a little longer, i jumped on the ram on day 1.
I changed the 4pin for a 8pin cpu cable and bought a Hyper 212+ Cooler and all i could do is OC from 4.2 Ghz to 4.3 Ghz to my i5 3570k.
          Thanks for the answers guys

I have the same board but an i5 3570k and was looking at the same ram but discovered as parsec stated it would be a no go. I finally decided to go with these:
            Newegg.com - Mushkin Enhanced Blackline 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 2133 (PC3 17000) Desktop Memory Model 997015

It seems the keys for memory compatibility for the Extreme4 is only use a 2 stick kit and 1.5v (for stock voltage).

I don't see no reason wy you can't achieve the 2400 it 's all about voltage increases and persistence i don't see the processor being the limiting factor, And regarding support lists i have had many a memory in the past that are not on mb support lists.

What have you done to try get them @ 2400 exactly?

I tried it raw with Auto Voltage, didn't work, and i tried 1.7 DRam Voltage, didn't work either.

There is little or no real world performance gain with z77 systems when running with ultra high memory speeds.
I've seen several z77 threads in the Gigabyte forum where there were issues with getting some ultra fast memory kits to run at its rated speed. Recent newer bioses have fixed this problem with some memory kits. Contact ASRock tech support at ASRock > Support Request Form and see if they can provide you with a beta bios that might allow higher memory speeds.

your lucky to reach 2400mhz,its down to each cpu imc or how well the mb's bios supports that brand of memory, ive seen higher read/write/copy figures with ram at 2133mhz than at 2400mhz on some boards,so anything around 2133mhz is perfectly fine imo

It depends on the memory too, I wish I understood all the factors that matter. It likely depends on the memory chips used in each model, and even if we could ID them, we couldn't fix anything if the chips were the limiting factor.

I'm running that crazy new Samsung memory on my Extreme 4, 16 GB, 4 x 4GB DIMMs. I have them at 2000, 10 11 11 28 1T, at 1.35V (yes, 1.35V.) I became side tracked with the crazy low voltage that I haven't tried increasing the speed yet, while I am making sure it is stable at 1.35V.

D-Proto, Ivy Bridge CPUs run hot so you need all the cooling you can get. They don't use a lot of power, even when OC'd, but if you have high end video cards, they could be limiting the power available from your PS. What PS are you using?

My point is 16GB or 4 DIMMs is possible on this board, but memory has so many unknowns it's difficult to generalize about it.

4.2 4.3 is good for 3i5k as they don't get up there like the 2nd's it was released for the pcie3 standard and aren't really ment to push clock speeds as they cook staying with the motherboards voltage is recommended for ivys
