*New Builder* X79 Extreme6 Dr. Debug Reading 60

So I'm brand new to building my own PC and had all the parts together last night. Sweating bullets installing the i7-3820 hoping not to mess it up, installed the Hyper 212 EVO. Went to run a test boot and had no post beep. Dr Debug came up with 0x60 as the error which is DXE Core is Started.

After trying to figure out what I had done wrong I came across a couple of tests.

1.) Tried only single sticks of RAM still no post beeps

2.) Booted up without memory and without a GPU and I got a beep, but since there was no memory the board wouldn't boot up.

Hopefully it's as simple as the memory I bought wasn't compatible with the board. However ASRocks website said that it is compatible. The memory I was using is:

G.SKILL Sniper Low Voltage Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model F3-12800CL9D-8GBSR2

Did a bit more research and bought the:

G.SKILL Ripjaws Z Series 8GB (4 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model F3-12800CL9Q-8GBZL

I hope this is the only problem and once the new memory comes in it will work, still excited about being a new builder and just hoping its not a mobo or CPU issue.

Does anyone have any experience with this or any suggestions for this newbie? I would appreciate it

Try the samsung ram, its inexpensive and works with just about everything. Make sure you have the ram in the correct slots 1,3,6,8 (not 1,3,5,7) for 4 dimms, but I can confirm the samsung ram works with extreme6 and 3820

Samsung MV-3V4G3D/US (2x4GB) also available in 2x2GB version I believe, but look around... the ram is so good and priced so right it can be hard to find.

Thanks after the new RAM I just ordered comes in, I'll give that a try. I only had two sticks which were installed in DDR3_A1 and DDR3_B1 which are slots 1 and 3. Could something as simple as not having 4 sticks of memory affect the booting of the mobo?

The bios should automatically set things to dual channel mode if only 2 dimms installed as far as i can read. I just installed 4 dimms on my build and it worked fine. Maybe try installing on a1 and C1(slots 1 and 8) and see what happens, this may be the proper way. You really want to use 4 dimms minimum, otherwise its almost a sin to have an x79 platform, take advantage of quad channel, even if just 4x2GB.

For what is worth Try slots B1 and D1 for just 2 dimms. Asus boards work this way, and the rest is the same as ASrock.

Cool thanks for the ideas gord, I'll give em a try. Either way if it works great, then that means the CPU isnt shot and the mobo isnt shot. Ill still send em back so I can get the use out of the quad channel.

If I had installed the CPU wrong or bent the pins on the mobo, would the board even get to realizing that the memory wasn't correct?

For what is worth again, I thought I installed my CPU wrong because there are no pins, the CPU kind of sits on top and didn't feel like it went into the slots properly, and I had to use a lot of force to close the locking mechanisms....but it was fine. Anything is possible when it comes to your first build.

So I tried putting the RAM into the different slots to no avail. Just going to have to wait for my new memory to come in. Its weird a memory that is approved by ASRock doesnt work but whatever. I reseated the CPU re-did the thermal paste and installed the heatsink. I did notice one of the standoffs comes into contact with a part of the retention levers but looking at the majority of X79 mobos, they all have the same lever setup. Will post again after the memory comes in.

Popped in new memory Ripjaws Z and everything worked. Saved me the headache of having to RMAing mobos and CPUs. Thank the lord!

Good deal!! probably got bad memory first time through, rare but does happen.
