lm having problems trying to convert movies that l have downloaded they have downloaded as mpg's and avi's from a site to play on my dvd player for my tv... what can l do?... what am l doing wrong?

There are any number of guides on how to create DVD-playable disks. From what I've seen so far, try to stay away from VCD unless it is a alst resort since the play quality generally sucks.
