I've always wondered about data deletion on a hard drive that has developed some bad sectors. Is it possible that the failure of the physical media could leave it in a state where old data could not be completely overwritten using software?

When files are deleted from the Recycle bin, operating system removes them from list of files on the hard drive. However, original contents of the files remain on the drive until it is overwritten. You cannot simply permanent delete data from the disk but can overwrite it. Overwritten data is unable to recover.
The available tool is Darik's Boot and Nuke(Darik's Boot And Nuke | Hard Drive Disk Wipe and Data Clearing). But there is no gurantee for data removal. Details of this is mention below.

Darik's Boot and Nuke, as "an open-source boot disk utility (read: works on nearly any computer) that supports a wide variety of disk wiping methods and operates from inside the computer's RAM, allowing it to scrub the disk thoroughly at a remove. When files are deleted from the Recycle bin, operating system removes them from list of files on the hard drive.
