Speakers!!

Aww man..
Now when i get these great speakers, if i get them. ( as i need to purchase a fridge aswell :/)
I'll want to purchase a new sound card, or maybe my current one will suffice. ?
I'd like a Sound Blaster Audigy Platinum, need the remote :D

You have a sound blaster live 5.1 right now. It'll hold. Now as for buying an audigy I dought you'll notice a difference in sound quality but you buy it if you want to. Only the true sound enthusiest can notice a difference. Even then it's only very little.

RDR is right. Get 2.1 speakers. Logitech makes a z340 available in US for way under $50 USD and sounds great too.

Well rather than the sound card itself i think the main quality issue comes from the speakers. With the SB Live & SB audigy both using a high quality 5.1 set, or even high quality 2.1 set you arent going hear any difference whatsoever that is detectable by humans.

Very true, i dont think ill purchase the audigy platinum. I only wanted it for the remote :D
As for speakers, from your replies, 2.1 is just as good as 4.1 ?
I was planning to buy either the Altec Lansing 641's or the Logitech Z-560's.
But as for 2.1 sound, what would be the best in the Altec range, or any other high range audio specialists?

Whilst good satellites are important, the quality of the 0.1 channel is very important too. No speaker set is complete without a high quality sub. Just a change in perspective, another thing you could do is buy a high quality stereo speaker set. For example, my stereo system, is hooked up to a kenwood speaker system, 2 L R satelites, 1 center satelite, 2 triple speaker boxes about 3 feet in height, and one 8.5 inch kenwood sub. The sound is amazing. Although this setup is not cheap. I would only do this if you are going to listen to all music/play all music video/watch alot of DVD's on your computer, but it could be an option for ya.

Sounds great and expensive. But my family already has a very nice surround sound system om our large tv downstairs. This is merely for my own bedroom listening pleasure.
By the way, in your opinions which are better Altec Lansing 64's or Logitech z-560's

personally, I wouldn't spend more than ~$200 on computer speakers - unless you have a professional type external DAC - the analog signal coming out of a SB live or Audigy isn't clean enough to warrant it. Yes a big sub will produce more/louder bass, but it can't compete with a good quality stereo system for playing CD's and DVD's

I know some people don't have this option but I prefer to keep my home A/V system and my computer separate.

I am thinking of setting up one box as an MP3 server - but I would use an external USB connected DAC to produce the unamplified signal for my stereo.

You got the sound card capable of it right? Cause creative makes the worst speakers compared to the other companies. Its almost literally a joke I read a review on the 5300's. Someone opened up one of the speakers and that BIG BIG SUBWOOFER is actually just a huge open box and the speaker is like 3 inches. The speaker that actually show is just there for its looks but does operate. Also the wattage that the speakers say they are capable of is not true because inside the speakers (opened up again) it has the max wattage which is half of what they say in the specs! So when you say not impressed with quality and you prefere the altec lansing 2.1's. I guess the 2.1's actually make better quality.

both of my boxes have SB Live! 5.1's in them - When the Creative 5300's first came out - I read a few reveiws that rated them fairly well:confused:..I will never, never buy creative speakers again.
Since I don't watch DVD's on my computer & I don't game alot - what do I need 5.1 for anyway?
Maybe it's partly because I'm spoiled from the Yamaha & JBL 5.1 sound system in my rec. room with my big screen :D

Oh so do i, my A/V system is seperate from my computer system which is just two 5 inch satellites (Some old Altec Lansings). I was just outlining a possible different option.

Yeh im only 18. My parents bought all this flashy kenwood crap from singapore real cheap including a very nice 8.5 inch sub. Anyway, on speakers, the klipsch 5.1 which are widely regarded as the best on the market, are hard to find, PCCG sells the for like $650, so it'll blow a hole in your pocket, there are also some really expensive creative ones that arent very good. All in all, i would say, Logitech 4.1 or Abit 5.1

I'm as old as you two put together....so my A/V and computer purchases come out of my own pocket - they still have to be approved by my wife though...most of the time :D

Luckily, I have a job that ensures I will always have at least one fast computer in my house
