It has been confirmed that many hard drive manufacturers will be reducing their warranties from 3 years to 1 year on IDE drives. Seagate started it, and apparently Western Digital and Maxtor are following suit. October 1st is the planned changeover date, so if you are looking for a new drive get one now!!!!!!!!!!
No announcement yet.

:edit:
I found this, and stand corrected.
http://support.wdc.com/warranty/newpolicyfaq.asp
me thinks though that the retail boxes will have a reg card or sticker that gets you the 3 yr and that the oem packs that we are all used to buying <drive and silica gel pack in a sealed anti-static> will be the ones that get the shaft.
Riddle me this batman...
80gb 2meg = $94.00
Shipping Charge : $1.45
Total Charge : $95.45
plus 19.95 for warantee = 115.40
or
80gb 8mb =$105.00
Shipping Charge : $1.95
Total Charge : $106.95
so really what would you wanna buy any way??? we're tweakers for gods sake, I want the 8mb cache. yes it does make a difference esp in raid setups my two 80gb se's SMOKE together as 1 160gb drive.
but seriously I have never had a drive go out on me under warranty except in 2 cases.
1.>Within 6mo
2.> Damage from heat or other truely non-warranty issues i.e. e.s.d. etc. etc. ad nausem
and I have about 500 systems out in my area all WD or samsung
Flame if you like but I say DEAL with it.
