Re: Which Hard-Drive brand should I buy?

    Hello

I'd love to order of NewEGG and all those other american sites...

The problem is, I'm in australia... and what with the economy the way it is... and shipping/tax and all that stuff... it'd be easier and probably better to just do local or semi-local (same country... easier if needing to collect on warranty).

While I've got nothing against hitachi or Seagate. I'm a big fan of the Samsung Spinpoint F1 series. The drives are fast, quiet and thus far reliable for me.

            Thanks...

Ah I've got another question, what exactly will RAID 0 do for me?

Because I have found that the cheap 500GB are 16MB Cache, yet the cheap 1TB are 32MB Cache.

And if all RAID 0 does is double the cache... well you understand what I am asking.

Is that what RAID 0 does? To make it (almost) double the speed?

PS: The 1TB are a little cheaper than 2 500GB. About $11 difference in price...

Re: Which Hard-Drive brand should I buy?

raid 0 splits your data into pieces and spreads it across all the drives in the array... this allows you to act with 2+ heads at once, effectively doubling, tripling, quadrupling etc. the read/write speeds... however because you split up your data, you increase the risk of data loss, because if one drive fails, all the data in the array will become corrupt (at least anything over the size of your stripe, which is normally about 64KB)

                Yowch... sounds kinda scary.

Wait, can I change the size of my stripe?

Like to 5MB or something? So any word docs I work on won't be lossed?

Yes, you can choose a stripe size (Most use 64 or 128kb) you cannot nor would you want to use 5MB

No data would be lost ever unless your RAID Crashed on you or a disk died

                    Okay.

What stripe size would you recommend? Or should I stick to defaults?

Something nice from Crate and Barrel or Pottery Barn, one of those stores, wow gold. I think that anything you think they would use and enjoy would be nice.
