  • Gigabyte GA-ex58-extreme major issue

Hi guys, I have a major problem I need help with. I have a GA-EX58-Extreme that I have flashed to the latest bios, and now my PC wont post. I get 1 long beep and 51 (probably considered continuous) short beeps. Post code is C1, which would normally be considered to be a memory issue, then the board powers off, then on again a few seconds later with post code 88 and no beeps. Turning it off and on leads to the 88 code and no beep, but pulling the plug and clearing cmos returns it to C1 post code with the 1 long beep and continuous short beeps.

The memory is fine as I had memtest run for 10 hours making a pass an hour with no errors.

I think the bios is not corrupt, but wont detect my memory after the flash, as the backup bios did not kick in, neither did the bios boot sector recovery. No access is attepted to the floppy so can't upgrade via that. Its an award bios so cant force upgrade with key combination.

I need to force the bios to upgrade, either by forcing bad checksum (which i dont know which pins to short or even where they are as I cant see a bios chip as its probably under the 'Ultra durable 3' shielding) or by some other unknown method.

I need suggestions as I'm stuck and, to be honest, quite upset about it!

    Thanks in advance.

    Re: Gigabyte GA-ex58-extreme major issue

Bummer dude, The best way to get a bad checksum would be to pull out the battery for a while lets say 30 minutes and then put it back in and boot up, that will reset your clock to who knows but it wont be right, it will be before u updated the bios and should hopefully give u an option to load default. Just make sure everything is plugged in, Ie Ram and graphics card, make sure there sweet and try it.

      Re: Gigabyte GA-ex58-extreme major issue

I've come to the conclusion that the bios wont detect my ram. Had this issue with factory installed bios on first boot attempt, but after reseating the ram it was fine, and was fine for 11 hours of memtest. Cant flash back the bios because I cant get to the bios screen as ram has issues (C1 post message, 1 long beep, reboots, 1 long beep followed by continuous short beeps, reboot, followed by 88 and no beeps).

I'm using patriot viper extreme 1600mhz ram 9-9-9-24. Should be fine, but new bios seems to hate it. Can only think of buying a 512mb stick of ddr3 to get it to post, then flash back to F3.

      Any thoughts? Thanks

Can you even get 512mb of DDR3, lol. Did u try the battery thing? Reset your ram, try with just one stick in, try with no sticks in. You can get to the bios with no ram cant you? no probably not. Reset your video card.

              Re: Gigabyte GA-ex58-extreme major issue

I think the 2 Bios chips are soldered into the motherboard dude next to each other on the bottom left hand corner next to pciex8-1,dont know the pin outs for them tho.
I did have some issues like you are experiencing when I first got the board (it had F2 I think) and could not get into the bios at all with my corsair dominator kit, eventually with one stick I got it posting after hours and hours of clearing cmos, swapping ram and battery out,and once in the bios I manually set my timings, and then flashed to F3,
Hope you get some luck dude if not Rma time.

                Re: Gigabyte GA-ex58-extreme major issue

Tried RAM that was on the hardware compatibility list and got same issue. Guess what gigabyte said (what you read below is true according to them, which i couldnt believe):

"If the main bios is badly damaged, the backup bios will not kick in"

LOL??!!?? Isnt that what its designed for? This is the last gigabyte board I will ever buy!

RMA'd it, hoping to get it back by mid feb. Gigabyte have wasted a month and a half of my time with this rubbish -_-

Well that sucks dude. I had to RMA my X48-DS5 Board last week, it wsa DOA. I was disappointed to be honest, Gigabyte used to be the top brand. I hope our new boards are perfect.

Yeah The backup bios is really just there so you can save an image of a good config and if you have a bad OC you can just reload the good config without having to change ever setting manually again. I think.

                        HELP IS NEEDED...PLEASE!!!

I HAVE RECENTLY BUILT A NEW PC AND I AM HAVING PROBLEMS WITH GIGABYTE EX58 EXTREME MOTHERBOARD (BIOS REV F2) DETECTING (3x 1024mb) x2 = 6GB TOTAL MEMORY TRIPLE CHANNEL OCZ DDR3 PC3-10666 1333hz.

IF I INSERT THE BOTH TRIPLE CHANNEL DDR3 IN ALL 6 DIMMS THE SYSTEM WILL NOT BOOT TO WINDOWS VISTA 32BIT OR 64BIT.

HOWEVER, IF USE ANY 1 SET OF TRIPLE CHANNEL DDR3 ON DIMMS 1,3, AND 5 THE SYSTEM WORK FINE...

ANY SUGGESTION WOULD BE VERY HELPFUL.

I'm not positive but your problem with not being able to run your full 6 gigs might be power. If I were you I would try something along the size of 800+ watts. Remember more power wont hurt you, however not enough will cause a lot of weird problems, i.e. random failures when under load, certain things not powering up, or working correctly. If thats not the problem, then you might have bad DIMM slots on your board in the 2,4,6 positions, since you said you tried both sets of tri-channel. I have a horrible problem with my EX-58-Extreme, but mine is with no video output after it all worked flawlessly for 2 months, after a lot of forum searching just going to bite the bullet and buy a real MB brand, Asus.
