How much ram.

I didn't have much luck searching, so.........
I got a dell 1.4 mhz laptop for Christmas. It is intel celeron and has 256 on board ram, part of it is shared. I think the ram should be updated, but don't know whether to get just 512 more or a gig more. I noticed the/a gig is typically more than double (in price) that of 512. Anyway, I will be using it primarily for internet surfing and downloading, some word processing and some photo editing, no gaming. How much should I get, thanks in advance.

If you want (and if the laptop supports it) you can get another 512MB stick or another 256MB stick. Anything more would be overkill for that system.
