  • PC3200 or lower latency 2700

This question follows up on one I asked in the 'im a total noob and don't know what to buy' section (or something like that). I have a northwood 2.53 p4, and asus p4p800-se board, and asked about RAM. The recommendation I got was for PC3200. My question is this: Would I be better off putting the money into 2 sticks of lower latency PC2700 since this would still leave room for a good bit of overclocking and be faster memory. I'm looking at this memory http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduc...144-122&depa=1

Is there any real advantage to the 3200 besides upgrading later? I doubt I'll get to the limits of the 2700 with my current processor. Of course the Low Latency PC3200 would be nice, but I need to conserve the cash; so it looks like I need to stay below the 200.00 mark.

    Thanks

Some CAS2.5 PC3200 ram would be good as well as fitting into your budget

If you are overclocking I would get soemthing better then Corsair Value RAM. Whiel that RAM would be great for someone not overclocking you will need soemthing else if you do overclock. For $220 you could get this:
        http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduc...220-033&depa=0

It uses Samsung TCCD chips on a brainpower PCB and I ahve seen it overclock very well. Also consiudering it's price v. other TCCD RAM it is a very good buy.

That is nice memory, I suggested it to a freind and he loves it, overclocks very well.

If he gets any PC3200 its very unlikely that with that 133MHz (533MHz quad pumped) CPU he'll push it past its rated minimum of 200MHz (400DDR) but any P4 will thrive on memory with fast timings (2-2-2-5/2-3-2-6).

              I would go with Cas2 PC2700 over Cas2.5 PC3200 with that CPU...

I'd get a couple sticks of this, but that PDP that KoolDrew linked to is better, if you want to spend a lot more, that is. That Mushkin may handle reduced timings anyway, at lower speed or with voltage adjustments.

On the other hand, you probably won't get to PC3200 speeds anyway, so low-latency PC2700 would likely be better, though it would greatly limit future use of the RAM, so I'd still go for low-latency PC3200.

I really think you should spend the extra money for ballistix rams. Aren'tthey a lot more stable. They are $119 per 512mb stick.

No its not "alot more stable"

They are better performers/overclockers, but hardly worth the $50-$60 extra they'll cost, in this situation, anyway.
