  • Crucial explains chip density, compatibility, and pricing

Ever get a screamin' deal on memory you just assumed was compatible
with your computer, only to find that after you installed it, your system
only recognized half the megabytes it should-or worse yet-wouldn't
even boot? Suddenly, that screamin' deal becomes more of a headache
than a money-saver. The problem might be memory density migration and
how it relates to compatibility with different computers.

A computer's chipset can only support the memory technology it was
designed with. A great many older systems in use today cannot support
the newer, higher density, less expensive chips. Thus, the less
expensive modules (abundantly available these days) that appeal to
the price-conscious consumer might not actually work in an older system.

    That's why we've updated Crucial's award-winning Memory Selector(TM) to
display only the modules that are 100 percent guaranteed to work in a
given system. For the 4,000 systems that might be affected by
incompatible memory density we now display a special alert informing
the customer that their system requires modules with a certain density. Want to see an example? Visit www.crucial.com and look up memory
upgrades for a Gateway 500 Series (SDRAM).

is uniquely qualified to address it, read "Compatibility. It's Crucial."
