I need to extend my signal on my router. It is not going as far as I need. The place where I need it has an Ethernet port in the room but I would need to be able to wire from the piece of equipment that I decide to use there. It would probably best be a router unless an access point can have ports to hook up to additional equipment in the room that I already use. I know it is best to stay with the same brand and my router is NETGEAR DGN3500. Can anyone tell me what they would use? Thanks.

Re: What do you recommend for extending your wi fi signal.
What old routers do you have lying around? That's probably going to be your best bet especially if they're supported by DD-WRT. I've been dealing with a very similar situation.
I bought one of these Linksys RE2000 and its VERY user friendly, literally just plug it in to your computer and select your network and enter the password. I had the 1000 and it wasn't perfect, my E4200 with DD-WRT was more perfect, but I put many hours into learning about networks and configurations and flashing DD-WRT firmware and such.
If there's a local store around you that carries it, I'd buy the netgear range extender that runs like $30 or $40 at Best Buy usually if I was looking for easy setup. If it's from a local store you can try it and if you don't like it you can return it and try a different route.
Keep in mind that you'll cut your bandwidth in half when you're using a repeater. I ended up buying an Asus RTN65U and it's such a solid performing router that I eliminated the need for my range extender I was connecting too and moved it to the other side of the house, now I run straight off the router.
Side note: Someone gave me a DGN 3500 that I'm going to use for a range extender when I need it, and two of them are supposed to connect really well together with one being a repeater. It might be worth picking up another one used for a bargain if you love the router you're using.

Re: What do you recommend for extending your wi fi signal.
Well, I got an Access Point but I just can't get it to work. It is the dlink DAP-1522. I think I am following the directions but am feeling very stupid right now. Anyone have this AP and if so, how did you get it to work? Thanks.Windows 7 Professional

Re: What do you recommend for extending your wi fi signal.
It might help if you download and install Wi-Fi Inspector | Xirrus freeware.
Here's a sample screen-shot that might help you diagnose the problem when you run the wifi inspector from your system.

Re: What do you recommend for extending your wi fi signal.
Britgeezer,
Shame on you, haven't you learned to do a web search to find what you want.
A web search using: windows wi-fi network monitor manager gadget will provide links to download their gadget and standalone software.
The search results will also provide links to other free wifi programs and/or gadgets.
Major download websites, such as Download.com and others have free downloads for the Xirrus v:1.2.1.4 inspector program.
After installation of the WiFi Inspector program a pdf user guide is included in the Xirrus folder in the Program Files (X86) system folder.
You can download the Xirrus wifi gadget from Xirrus Wi-Fi Monitor - Windows 7 Desktop Gadget
AFAIK the latest version number is 1.20 for the Xirrus wifi gadget.
The Xirrus WiFi gadget works alone, but their wifi inspector program has additional useful features.
I also use the Network Meter (v9.4) gadget from Most Wanted Windows Desktop Gadgets - Windows 8, Windows 7 and Windows Vista.
v9.6 is a newer version for Network Meter but I prefer v9.4.
Sorry, I couldn't resist giving you a hard time about using web searches, especially when you recently searched the web in your wifi security thread.Q9650 @ 4.10GHz [9x456MHz]

Re: What do you recommend for extending your wi fi signal.
The Xirrus site was intrusive and required us to provide way too much information years ago.
Obviously, nothing has changed.Q9650 @ 4.10GHz [9x456MHz]

Re: What do you recommend for extending your wi fi signal.
My personal experience with trying loads of different routers over the years has been pretty poor overall. Most were troublesome, needing rebooting a lot. If I were to pick one out as better than the others I would definitely say it's the Belkin Wireless Play Max Router (duel band). Not many issues with it at all. The coverage is fairly good.
