  • BinModems - I mean WinModems

just wondering what everyone's opinion and past experiences are with the lovely Internal WinModem, just got one for my girlfriend, and I myself hate them, but according to my dad (the manager) they have had the least problems with installations involving that modem...

at least they still have a rockwell-based external modem....

    anyone?

they suck they suck they suck

from an IT support point of view - we have the most trouble with them - usually the internal laptop ones are the worst though

Well I've got a usb software modem and it is suprisingly pretty good ! It's even an Aztech. Despite the **** company the modem rocks ! It doesn't seem to use much cpu either.

I didn't say winmodem deliberately 'cas I've now got linux drivers for it, I'm yet to try it though.

It's not at all uncommon to get 5.5 - 6k downloads. I have even had downloads at 11 k in the wee hours of the morning from a server only a couple of k away. No idea how that works since it's higher than the max therotical limit, but there you go !

My BinModem is pretty good !

I use an AOpen winmodem with a Rockwell chipset. I get downloads anywhere between 4.5 - 5.5k/s. However, when my CPU is under high load (for instance when I burn CDs), the modem will always shut off and disconnect me from the internet.

I play Starcraft on Battle.net with no problems, but I can't get a ping lower than 700ms in Counter-Strike.

                            Yes, they suck suck suck!!
