well i really think other factors determine your avg download speed, ie. line speed/noise, CPU load, weather, general ISP congestion

I use an AOpen external serial modem with a Rockwell chipset and have never had any problems with it. Always connects at 49333bps and never disconnects due to a problem with it (Mum picking the phone handset up is another matter). So yes WinModems do suck - external serial ones rule :thumb:What came first - Insanity or Society?

I've been going full bore 48,000 for 3 weeks now. And that's on a cheesy internal winmodem.
I hope Santa is particularly kind this year to my phone guy!The reason a diamond shines so brightly is because it has many facets which reflect light.

I love my modem. I'ts internal, however not a winmodem. It never ever EVER drops carrier on me. No matter if someone picks up the phone on the same line and leaves it off for 2 minutes, it stills hangs in there. :) Love it to pieces. Had it for yonks - recycled from my P133 days, not exactly have an Austel permit... oopps. :pOnyx

For those in AUS who want a hardware controlled PCI modem, Compuworld have AOpen ones that work really well. Don't panic when you see "soft" written on them - they really are hardware based :)What came first - Insanity or Society?
