  • PSU Recommendations Please?

    MOBO- ASUS M5A97 R2.0
    CPU - AMD FX-8150
    RAM - Corsair Vengeance 16GB DDR3 1866MHz Kit 4x4GB Red
    GPU - BFG Tech GeForce 9600 GT OC 512MB PCIe 2.0 x16
    HD1 - WD Blue WD5000AAKX 500GB
    HD2 - WD Green WDBAAY0020HNC 2TB
    OPT1- Samsung SH-222BB/BEBE 22X DVDRW SATA
SND - Sound Blaster Xi-Fi Platinum PCIe
PSU - CoolerMaster eXtreme Power Plus 600W RP-600-PCAR

    System boots.

Issue #1 - Ram reads 1333mhz, attempts to change speed to 1866mhz results in instant system shutdown, no blue screen, just powered down.

Issue #2 - System wil boot into windows and perform basic tasks. Internet browsing/streaming. Installation of driver files from cd/dvd drive. Full format of a 2TB drive. But, at some point, without what I can see as a specific user inputed cause I get a instant system shutdown, no error, no bluescreen, just powered down.

Computer will not restart or power up after either of those system crashes without cycling of the PSU on/off switch or physical wall plug disconnect/reconnect.

My motherboard documentation stated that despite having a 8-Pin CPU plug on the mobo, that I could connect either a 4-Pin or 8-Pin 12V Cable. Since this PSU only has a 4-Pin that is what I am running on.

I believe the issue to be the power supply. It appears to run stable under normal operating conditions when power is supplied by a Coolermaster TR2 RX 650W with the proper 8-Pin cable (Not put under any overclocked load or heavy gaming graphics). If I could get some confirmation based on your inspection of the sytem hardware I'd appreciate it.

I would also like a recommendation for features and wattage requirements I should be looking at with the current system, and perhaps a model you'd suggest.

If it wouldn't be too much trouble, I'd like help with future proofing my computer. I would also like a recommendation for the same system with the following two changes.

    a) Swapping of the 1(one)x GeForce 9600 GT OC 512MB GDDR3 PCIe 2.0 for
    2(two)x ATi Radeon HD 7750 1024MB GDDR5 PCIe 3.0
    b) Overclocking of the CPU to ~4.0 ghz

Thank you very much for your time and help.

    Re: PSU Recommendations Please?

Using a high quality power supply is an absolute must from my experience.
Seasonic is my first choice and this includes other brands that sell some models that are made by Seasonic.
Some models from Antec, Corsair, and XFX are made by Seasonic.
Models made by SuperFlower are also excellent, where some Kingwin and Rosewill models are made by SuperFlower.
There are many name brand power supplies that are mediocre at best.

I recommend that you buy an 80 Plus Gold rated psu in the 650 - 750 watt range for a dual video card setup.
Check out http://forums.tweaktown.com/gigabyte...tml#post441459, post #14 and #20 for my recommendations. If you read through the rest of the thread, the OP got an excellent buy on a Rosewill Capstone modular psu that fixed his problems. If your are a Newegg email subscriber, you will find some Seasonic Gold or similar highly rated power supplies for about $100 from time to time.
Before you buy any psu, always check out the reviews at JonnyGuru, HardOCP, HardwareSecrets, PCPER, or TechPowerUP.

You will need some AMD overclocking help. You can't just set higher cpu or memory speeds unless you make some additional bios tweaks and do stress testing to ensure that your system is stable. I suggest that you create a new thread in the ASUS forum to deal with overclocking, where you include your motherboard and cpu models in the title.

My Seasonic made Antec TP750 TruePower New has been an excellent bronze rated psu that easily powers my overclocked MSI N460GTX SLI setup.

      Re: PSU Recommendations Please?

Until the system is stable there is no need to create an OC'ing thread. It will only serve to complicate matters.

      Ok, one at a time.

What is the specific Corsair part number for your 4x4Gb kit?

With the Coolermaster 650 installed are/were you able to change the memory to 1866? If so, is the system still rebooting as if it has a mind of its own?

Are you running the latest BIOS file, 1302?

Also, in going back over your original post, can we assume you performed a fresh install of the OS, versus simply moving a HDD with an OS already installed from your old system onto this new MB?

A fresh OS installed to HD1, WD 500Gb Blue?

          Corsair CMZ16GX3M4X1866C9R Vengeance Red Desktop Memory Kit - 16GB (4x 4GB), PC3-15000, DDR3-1866MHz, 240-pin DIMM, 1.5V, CL9, XMP Ready at TigerDirect.com

Pulled part number from mobo QVL, didn't realize, and have been recently informed the zambezi cpu's evidently only support 1866mhz ram speeds in dual stick situations, not quad stick ones.

No, any attempt to change the ram speed via the bios resulted in a no post situation. It only ran (still with the random psu overload shutdown) while auto set at 1333mhz.

Not positive on the BIOS, haven't flashed it though... don't currently have it here to check atm. WIll get back to you on that one.

And yes, fresh install of OS onto HD1, 500GB WD Blue.

Thanks for your time and assistance!

            Re: PSU Recommendations Please? (Solved)

Thank you everyone for all the information and suggestions. It is appreciated. After posing the question on a few different forums and doing my own research on the suggestions I received, I feel very confident in purchasing the XFX Pro 650W Core Edition suggested by iceclock from tomshardware forums.

Reviews from multiple websites had nothing but praise (beyond someones ranting complaint about the advertising/packaging) for this PSU regarding internal components, actual output and heavy load high temp testing results.

Thanks iceclock, appreciate your time and knowledge man!
