  • What does this sound like?

Let's see if I can explain what is going on. My friend called and said his computer was acting up. They were working on the computer and the screen goes black but you can see the cursor. The cursor (arrow) won't move with the mouse and as you may have guessed the computer still is running. There is no way to shut it down but to do a hard shut down. When I went to start it back up there was no power. I unplugged all power to the computer and pushed the power button to release any electricity left. I plugged back in and restored power. I pushed the power button and it worked for a couple of weeks before it did it again. I went back out and tried this time just the reset button and it restarted with no problem. Since then for the last month or two it has done it twice and a restart has worked. I am sure there is many things that it could be but does anyone have any ideas? Thanks.

Could need a clean windows install? Did you scan it good for viruses/spyware when you were working on it?

Could also be incorrect settings, or dying memory. Did you Memtest86+ the ram while you were there?

What is the full system specs?

What motherboard? Did you set the ram and northbridge voltages for 4GB?

Re: What does this sound like?

I have it listed above. The Asus mobod. It has run for over a year just great. Ram voltage was set according to voltage requirement but I have never heard of the northbridge having to be set.

Re: What does this sound like?

Ahh, sorry I missed it since it was on the same line as something else.

Ya for 4GB you need to set your NB Voltage a bit higher than stock, normally 1.2-1.24 is good.

If you can please test this memory on another PC just to be sure it is not faulty, run 5-10 passes with Memtest86+

Re: What does this sound like?

If it is not set at a higher voltage what can happen? It has run since last October without any problem.

Re: What does this sound like?

No damage can occur, but it can cause instabilities and random BSOD's.
