  • Windows XP doesn't find Hard disks

I recently helped my friend put together his new system, but we are having trouble getting windows to recognize the hard drives.

The motherboard is different then what I've worked with before, it has only one regular IDE connector, then two red ones which I guess are RAID compatible. We have the dvd drives hooked up through the regular IDE, and the Hard disks in the red ones. The BIOS setup recognizes the DVD drives, and the IDE scan during bootup finds the Hard drives ok, but once we get into windows setup, it can't find the hard disks.

If we don't boot off of the XP cd, The copy of windows thats on the drive already tries to boot up (we're using the same harddrive from his old system) Obviously, it fails because it was setup on a different system, but my point it the drives are working ok with the system, it just seems to be windows xp installation that won't recognize it.

Any help anyone can provide will be greatly appreciated. We're not trying to setup a RAID config or anything, were just wanting to use the connectors as regular IDE which we're supposedly suppose to be able to do. The board is an ASUS P5GD1 Socket 775 (LGA775)
