  • Computer starts to vibrate and make alot of noise

I just built a new computer yesterday as a secondary computer for my friend to play games on over my LAN. The computer works fine, everything setup properly and I haven't had any problems while using it. The only problem is that after the computer has been on for a little while, it starts getting louder and louder, eventually it gets real loud and starts to vibrate. It still doesn't cause any problems with the computer but as you can imagine its extremely annoying. It seems far to louds and shaky to be just a noisy computer, and it gets worse while its on. Sometimes it will slow back down again, but it always gets going again soon after.

I opened it up while it was doing this, and I don't think there is any way that it could be the case fan or the CPU fan, I thought it might be the power supply fan so I swapped the power supply but the shaking still started after a few minutes. Any ideas as to what is causeing this?

I'm relatively sure it's not the DVD drive, because that makes a differenet and quieter noise. Its not the Hard Drive, so that only leaves a fan somewhere, the parts I have that have fans are the

    CPU: P4 2.67 ghz
    Power Supply: Antec 300w
    Case: DYNEX ATX Mid tower
    Motherboard: ASUS
    Graphics Card: BFG Geforce 5900

My own machine did this initially because a screw was loose in the fan on top. I cut the hole and put the fan in myself, though. I'd imagine yours is from something similar. It's probably a fan causing the case to vibrate so loudly. You've already figurd out that it's probably a fan, though. My suggestion is you tighten all their screws and make sure they all have four screws.

Thanks, that seems to have been it. One of the CPU fans fasteners wasn't securely attached.

It still gets a bit loud, but it's a more "normal" loud sound, just a hum, not rattleing and vibrating. I think it might be getting a bit hot in there, making the fans work harder. I seems to get louder while running games, and gets quieter when I pull the case out of the PC shelf on my desk, and even quieter when I open the side panel, I guess cause it's getting cooler. Maybe I should find a better place for it.

Sounds to me like your CPU fan (or even one of the other ones) is attached to a thermal sensor that regulates how fast it goes. My own CPU fan has that option, though I've got it on manual control so it's really loud all the time, rather than just when it gets hot.

Yeah your CPU cooler is just speeding up to keep the CPU cool. Get a few more case fans and clean up all your wiring as best as possible.
