  • DVD/CD-RW undetected in Windows

I was hoping that I could resurrect this thread....

I am having a similar problem: My DVD and CD-RW are installed and powered in my computer, but they are undetected by Windows. They are not on my device manager list, and no CD that I put in either of the slots is autoplayed, or even detected.

It is as if I don't even have a CD-Rom/DVD drive at all.

    Please help!

    Thanks,
    Bokhard

Bokhard; I split this from the original thread you posted it in so maybe you will get some better help.

Does it show up in your Bios?

No I don't think it does. At least, if it does, I can't find it.

Something odd though... about 2 weeks ago I took my computer in to get it fixed for a different problem, and I had been having this DVD/CD-RW problem also, so I had them look at it also. When I got it back they told me that there was nothing wrong with my DVD/CD-RW and it worked fine. When I brought it home, it did work fine. I could see both drives in "My Computer" and everything seemed to work normally. I'm not sure when it stopped working, but now I am having no luck finding these drives. I haven't opened the case or changed anything since this happened.

Therefore, I don't think that it has been mis-installed or anything. I could be wrong though. =D

        Thanks again,

        Bokhard

Go to the Device Manager and delete the IDE controller that they're attached to and reboot.

If they do not show up in the Bios, this won't help.

I am taking a stab in the dark at this, but there may be a problem with your IDE cable itself, if it worked, and just mysteriously quit. I would purchase a new one (80 conductor/wire of course) and put it in and make sure all your jumpers are set right, and give it a go.

I switched the wires to one of the many that I have in my parts box, and still it doens't work. =/

              Any other suggestions?

              Thanks,

I would go to the removing the 2nd IDE channel from the Device Manager and rebooting than, as wayout suggested.

The problem is finally fixed; it turned out to be my "slave" CD-drive was short circuiting and was causing both CD-drives to fail.

                  Thanks for your help guys.
