  • Hard Drive Troubleshooting Tools...

    Hi Guys,

I have a server here and its role is the following:
    1. Hosts Public Website
    2. Hosts Intranet Site
    3. SQL Database

The server's specifications are as follows:

    CPU: Dual 1Ghz Pentium 3
    Memory: 2Ghz RAM
    Storage: x5 SCSI 10K/RPM hard drives (drives 1 & 2 are configured as RAID 1 and drives 3, 4 & 5 is configured as RAID 5

Drives 1 & 2 are dedicated for the operating system/IIS and drives 3, 4 & 5 are for data for eg: SQL databases.

    Problem is:
At random times, drives 3, 4 & 5 drive activity hits 100% resulting in the Intranet system not being able to service staff.

I ran the Windows performance tool on the server and found that the counter "Average Disk Bytes/Write" for object Physical Disk peaks at 100%.

I do not know which application or process is causing this issue.

In the past when this has happened, it seemed to have resolved itself on its own but this is not the case today.

Would you guys know of a hard drive diagnostics tool that I could use which could return information to me stating what causes hard drive overloads and issues?

    Thanks guys.

Don't know of any specific applications, but you should have a good enough idea based on what programs your running if there's any chance a specific applicaton does it on its own.

Also, what adapter are the RAID 5 drives on, and is that a an actual hardware RAID 5 or a software RAID 5?
