  • Sound problem with game, but fine normally.

    <!-- / icon and title --><!-- message -->

    Well actually 2 problems..

1st. I rebuilt a computer for someone with a Asus P4S800, INtel 2.8P4 retail box with fan, PC2700 512K, ATI Raedon 9200 128MB and XP Home SP1. We reused the case, floppy, cd drives (1 Mitsumi old one and a Sure and Friendly CD/RW), power supply (recently was replaced from what I was told 300w) and 40GB hard drive.

Basically its been a problem since built. The XP disk he bought didnt work right. Computer hung alot. So we used a different disk and it worked fine. Installed the Soundmax drivers for the board. Speakers work fine. We get sound for everything EXCEPT when he put Star Wars Battle for Naboo on. Game works fine except it has no sound other than a blip every 5-6 secs. I havent the clue as to the problem other than maybe its a driver problem. We have the updated drivers but do you just put them in the folder where the other soundmax ones are or by device mgr? I tried the device mgr way but it wouldn let me select the folder I put it in. BTW Naboo worked fine in 2 other computers (another 2.8P4 system w/asus board and my AMD laptop)

Other problem. He tried to install Star Wars Battlefront (yes hes a star wars geek, has every game for pc) but it locked up on the 2nd install disc (2700mb game). This is stumping me. Could an older CD-rom be a problem? One drive is at least 3yrs old and the other is close. We tried with both drives and it locked each time.

Any answers would be great. This guy (36) is just so impatient its like having a 6yr old around. He gets way bent out of shape about these problems with I think are minor. I'm about ready to just tell him to take it to the computer shop since I cant work on it without him jumping in and fiddling with things. He said he's gonna ask a guy he works with (who also builds computers) if he can help also. So any ideas guys?

The sound issue is likely going to be a compatibility problem between the game and the inbred sound of the motherboard. Since it works fine everywhere else (especially if it works in other games), it is unlikely to be anything else. You might try to visit the game creators site and see if there are any known issues and possible fixes for the problem you're having.

Regarding the installation of the other game, does the game install from these same disks on another machine? That should give you an idea as to whether to start looking for a faulty disk problem or a hardware problem.

Thing is it (Naboo with the sound problem) works fine on his computer with on-board sound and my laptop with onboard sound. I got to check to see which chipset his has. The problem computer is a SiS chipset.

He's gonna get a new CDRW today and we are gonna try that. Its pretty annoying that its being this difficult. I didnt even have as much problems with his studio computer putting 98SE on it (First time I ever installed 98). He's actually saying we should put 98 back on it, but doesnt 98 have issues with cpu's over 2Ghz?

Could try the latest patch for the games and\or turn your sound acceleation to the lowest setting in directx diagnostic tool and also make sure you have the latest version of directx for SW Battlefront. Other than that just make sure all your drivers\bios are up to date and you have no conflict in your device manager. If that doesn't work try a different soundcard. If you really think its your CDrom you could use a NoCD fix on the game to avoid use of the CD player for test purposes but I doubt that is the problem since all the needed sound files for Battlefront get installed on you harddrive, just make sure the games meet the system requirement for CD-rom speed as well as everything else.

Did some searching on Lucas Arts and apparently a few of their games can have issues with hyperthreading that causes sounds to not work. But yet he just ordered a new mobo last night since he thinks its bad. I told him hold off until today to make sure its NOT the mobo. Found out the 300w power supply is 3 yrs old and not 1yr as I thought. It restarted itself when we tried to play a DVD. From what I've been getting as a responce from thoer boards I asked this on is the p/s could be the culprit. Hopefully this will end soon.:D

Restarts could be cuased from a number of different things but if his powersupply is unstable that would definitly be one thing that would do it. (Usually) the more a PSU weighs the better it is. 300watts is a little weak for his system unless its a quality grade unit but I beleive weight seems to matter more than the PSU's total wattage specifications.

Well we replaced the old p/s with an Antec 400w one. Works fine now.

As for the game, I found on lucas arts tat naboo and a couple other games can have issues with hyperthreaded cpu's.

Just as a comment, I will never buy a SIS based chipset again after all of the sound problems I had with them over the years. The first time I had Choppy sound, tried a pci sound card no diffrence, got repacement board of same model, still choppy if not worse, so that is why I will never buy those chipsets again. Just thought I would throw my 3 cents in so yeah.

I know. Wasnt my choice of mobo. I just assembled it. Myself I wouldnt even consider having a P4 or Celery cpu'd machine. Cant tell my friend this. He still thinks AMD cpu's are junk. Never mind he's had a few Pentiums melt down on him and my XP2000 still is running fine after 2.5 yrs.

Oh BTW the old powersupply only had 11amps at 12v+.

:) I have the same problem - and I thought it was only me.
Setup - Asus p4s800 p4 2.8ghz. I usually don't play games but one that I do play is NFS Underground 2, and sound works upto the logon screen and after I pick the user the sound stops working. Other times it happends is when I listen to online radio via winamp. One other thing that's very odd and I don't know if it's due to the motherboard or not is that my mouse goes wild sometimes, I mean it disappears for a second or two or goes all over the screen. I don't remember if this was happening before the last bios update or not since it's been a while that I lived with this problem.
