Youll need to find out the make of the computer if its OEM or the mobo/video card if not. Most OEMs provide the drivers on thier website.

http://www.viaarena.com/ is a good sorce for Via base chipsets.

www.nvidia.com for an nvidia based graphics card.

www.ati.com for an ati Radeon based card.

Something else to consider is the order of installation. Since you stated you are using Win98, this is a very important step. Here is the order you should install/update your system:

          Windows
          Motherboard drivers
          Video card drivers
          Sound board drivers
          DirectX
All other necessary drivers for system
          Windows Update for critical updates/fixes

If you follow the order of installation above, you should minimize your conflicts to pretty much nothing. :)

When you install an os, you can't expect it to run everything properly with default drivers designed to just make it run enough so you can install the right ones.
And you better hurry with the win update. Microsoft has declared that win98/se are both totally obsolete and unsupported as of jan16 2004. Thats if they havent pulled it yet. Get a modern supported os.

Anyway, run sandra and it will tell you what chipset you have. You can't rely on any os to have the right(newest) drivers for chipsets. Sometimes as in the case of asus p2b, xp has the drivers for it since that chipset has no new drivers since xp was released.

If you stayed in touch with the news, you'd know that MS have again extended the support life of 98 / Me for a while. :) I'm guessing it'll stop supporting when Longhorn comes out (2005ish)

Ok then, the news was from yesterday. I guess to many corporations won't get with the times prompting the extension. It's not like I'm sitting here hoping and looking dayly for a miracle support extension for an obsolete product that has reached the end of it's practical life(it can't even properly address more than 256mb ram).
Reminds me of everyone that would not let win95 or 3.1 go to os heaven.

You need to take into consideration the price when you're talking about corporate environments. In our situation we have several hundred copies of Windows we would have to replace. Even with competitive pricing as a governmental entity the cost would be considerable. Add to this the fact that our budgets are constantly being hacked down and you can see where there is a lot of need for an extention of the Win98 support. After all, the OS still works for our needs so there is no immediate necessity of upgrading for no real gain.

As far as I can tell, there's three main reasons people aren't upgrading:

                    - Cost to upgrade software
                    - 'If it ain't broke, don't fix it'
                    - Old hardware not good enough for newer OS

Luckily here where I work we have a MLA, which entitles us to install any MS desktop operating system and any office product on any number of PCs. It's handy for the huge number of PCs throughout the university. However, the majority of PCs are still on Windows 2000 (plus a handful of NT / 9x machines floating around). They aren't upgraded because they don't need to be. They work fine the way they are.

yeah we'are lucky too - we've got SOE from microsoft (windows/office & CALS for all MS products), problem is that the video cards in our older PC's are not compatible with 2k/xp so we have to get rid of them the slow way, via replacement.

The quicker we get rid of win9x the better. In our environment its a piece of crap - too hard to maintain.
