Video card or Mobo??

    Video card or Mobo??

    Yesterday my PC started giving me problems out of the blue. When I turned it on, I noticed a few pixels were blue that shouldn't have been. After a few minutes, it got progressively worse. There would be blue "dots" in the scroll bars and random places on the screen. It then started displaying red "dots" in random places. If I wiggled the monitor cord going into the card it would get better for a few secs. Eventually the monitor blanks out, comes back on and all I get is a blank screen w/ an hourglass cursor. I tried removing the video card and replacing it, but no difference. I'm just wondering if there is a way I can definately tell that is is the video card and not the motherboard, and if anyone has any ideas. The card is a MSI Geforce TI 4400, only 1.5 years old.

    Try a different monitor and see if that helps. If you wiggled the cord to the monitor and it changed things and then also tried a different video card (Right?), then I'd say the problem stems somewhere from the monitors cord to the monitor itself.

      take a look at the monitor cable pins, some could be bent or snapped off all together.

        Sorry, I forgot to say that I did ty another monitor, same prob. I didn't try a different video card yet, since I only have one. I thought it may have been loose, so I took it out and reinstalled it making sure it was in tight. It just seems odd to me that it came out of nowhere, no real warning signs. I also tried resetting my ram, just to make sure nothing was loose inside. This is frustrating since it's not like I got a $20 video card in there...

          is the card overclocked? if it is, reduce the speeds back to the stock and see what happens.

          id try to get another video card to test whether it is your Ti4400 or not.

            What you're experiencing is artifacts. These happen when your video card memory overheats. If you're not overclocking, something happened that sent your case temp over the edge and is overheating the memory. How is your case airflow, ambient temp? Did you knock off some memory heatsinks accidently etc. etc.? You might still have a warranty on the card, and it might just be going bad, Id look to see if ya can get it replaced. If you are overclocking, turn it down a notch.

              No, I'm not overclocking, and I haven't changed anything (location, components, etc...). Just started happening out of the blue. I saw on some other forums that there may be problems with the memory on the card. Seems others have been having the same problems with GeForce TI 4200 & 4400. I don't think its a temp thing for two reasons, one I haven't changed anything at all, so I can't see why it would be running hotter all of a sudden; and the other is that it does it right away, sometimes even before windows loads. I guess my card is screwed, which really stinks, cause it's the worst time of year for cashflow...:shrug:

                The best way to test it would probably be to try it in another system. You should post a screenshot:?: .
