  • A few problems...

    Hey all,

A friend of mine recently had a mishap with his computer (what caused it we're not sure). The short of it is he had to replace his mobo and video card. Currently he's running the following stuff:

    P4 1.8
    Asus P4SDX
    Chaintech GeForce Ti4200 8xAGP
    SB Audigy
    WD 80GB HD

First problem: the video card "flickers". When Nvidia's drivers aren't loaded, it's alright. It just loads windows and pages really slow. Obviously not the performance you want out of a quality card. When you load up the latest Nvidia drivers, all hell breaks loose. The screen "flickers", and I mean in a bad way. The screen goes black for a few seconds, then it comes back for a second or so. Rinse and repeat forever. As I said, this is using the latest Nvidia drivers. I threw in my ATI Radeon Pro9600 and it worked fine, so the issue is with his vid card. Bad card, or incompatiblillity problems?

Second problem: The sound card is not being identified. I've uninstalled everything (hell, I reformatted his entire HD after installing the new mobo) and even tried loading it in safe mode. No help. On his previous mobo there was no problem like this.

Any helpful suggestions would be of great help. This is frustrating as hell.

    Thanks.

1- If your ATI board works fine and the nVidia one doesn't, it sounds like residual drivers causing a conflict. You'll want to make sure that all previous drivers are removed from the system before installing the nVidia board and the new drivers.

2- Onboard sound or PCI? If onboard, double check that the settings are enabled within the BIOS. If PCI version, make sure onboard is disabled. If it still won't work, try a different PCI slot.

Let me clarify. Problem with computer happened and thus we purchased the new hardware. I totally reformatted his harddrive and then loaded up the Nvidia drivers. The problem surfaced. In an attempt to identify the problem, I swapped in my ATI card and that worked fine. I took it out and reinserted the GeForce Ti4200 and the problem was still there.

So, the problem was never caused by residual drivers. I've enough experience to know how to uninstall/install different brands of video cards, so that shouldn't be the problem.

OK... I had thought you were running other components when you were talking about swapping out the nVidia and ATI boards. But in this case, you may have found a set of drivers that were either slightly corrupted during the download, or aren't playing nicely with your system. In either event, you can get some others versions and try those to see if the problem is with the driver support or the video board itself. Just make sure that if you go with an older set of drivers you answer NO to the questions asking if you want to keep the newer files being overwritten by the older driver set. If the problem is still the same, then you should probably go ahead and RMA the vid board.

How about the sound issue... did you get that squared away?

The motherboard you have has Onboard sound,so you should remove audigy and leave it out for now. While inside your case double check everything, you might of overlooked something.Basically you want the basic minimum of parts in your pc for troubleshooting[proceessor,1 stick of ram,videocard,hd,cd-rom,etc].Btw have you tried videocard in another system?does it reproduce same probs?we also need more info on the mishap,it might be related[don't just throw parts at it].Most likely when you installed audigy sound card with onboard sound enabled you caused hardware conflicts, and no matter how many times you reformat and reinstall windows the hardware conflicts are still there.please let me know if i'm wrong.Try removing any unnecessary hardware and reformat and install os.Tip:whenever i'm frustrated,i'll just tackle the prob another day[refeshed and clear mind].

umm, I'm assuming you've got all the AGP and IDE drivers and all that installed, correct?

sorry, I just had to ask:)

Just an update, since I was finally able to get time to fix my friend's computer...

The latest Detonator drivers seemed to have cleared up the flickering problem with the Chaintech Ti4200. As for the sound card, I moved it to another PCI slot and used the installation method for the Audigy provided by Tweaktown and it worked fine. He then went ahead and loaded up all the other extras from his Audigy disk and it works perfectly.

              Thanks for the help.
